2021 Surface Design Awards: Maida Smiles wins category

Maida Smiles Dental Clinic, a three-time finalist, was named winner of the ‘Public Building Interior’ category.

Pedra Silva Architects designed the sophisticated clinic to reflect a unique and visually engaging design concept, promoting the clinic’s personality.

The Surface Design Show is the only UK event focusing solely on interior and exterior surfaces. This year’s Surface Design Awards attracted 113 entries from 15 different countries. Taking place in London’s Business Design Centre, SDS showcases the best in surface material design, development, innovation and manufacturing.

An extensive programme of thought-provoking presentations, awards, debates, and innovative features sets SDS apart from other events. It draws an audience of 5,000 architects and interior designers anxious to discover and specify the latest surface solutions.

Memorable design

The unique approach at Maida Smiles – which passionately believes in going beyond the regular duty of care – is visible in our memorable layout and design. The progressive design concept we developed is in keeping with the advanced dentistry work we provide. The inspiration is based on the theme of ceramic dental implants, which are commonly used in restorative dentistry. This took the form of more than 1600 hand-crafted ceramic discs, which cover the walls in a honeycomb-style cluster, providing a modern, clean and clinical edge. We strived to create a modern, simple, sophisticated and timeless brand – to mirror the smiles we create on-site daily.

The result is a unique and memorable dental experience. Our clinic’s delicate, bespoke design indicates the attention to detail and personal focus given to every one of our patients, highlighting Maida Smiles’ pursuit of clinical precision and excellence. The minimalist, free-flowing design further maximises space, with the custom-made ceramic wall and iconic furniture working to create calming dynamics affecting surfaces, light and reflection.

The design further illustrates Maida Smiles’ appreciation for artisan practices involving high-skill craftsmanship and its collaborative approach with artists worldwide.

Before opening, we also invested significantly in a cutting-edge air-extraction system that removes potentially harmful contaminants, including aerosol particles frequently present in dental operating rooms, with a constant supply of fresh air. Given the current climate, this system is unique in the UK and has proved extremely useful. We have further invested in the highest quality technical equipment, including state-of-the-art dental photography, enabling us to communicate with dental lab technicians without face-to-face interaction.
