What is Root Canal Treatment?

Getting root canal treatment may seem like a daunting procedure, but it is one of the best ways to save a tooth that is severely infected or decayed. Root canal treatment is necessary when the inside of your tooth (the pulp) becomes severely infected or inflamed due to very deep decay.

During the treatment, the infected pulp of the decayed tooth will be completely removed from the tooth, and the root canals will be enlarged and thoroughly cleaned so that the dentist can fill them properly. After the bacteria has been removed, the root canal is filled, and the tooth is sealed with a filling or a crown. The treatment will be carried out over a couple of visits.

Why do I need Root Canal Treatment?

Many times, people wonder, why would I need a root canal? Can I fix my tooth with a filling, or just let it be?

Having an infected tooth can be very painful, which may make you worry about the treatment. However, the treatment here at Maida Smiles Dental Clinic is no more painful than a simple filling. You do not need to worry; a root canal is not a painful procedure, especially because the gums around the affected tooth, as well as the tooth itself, will be numbed, usually by local anaesthetic, before your procedure.

The biggest advantage of having a root canal treatment on a tooth, besides preventing pain and infection, is avoiding tooth removal. Root canal treatments are simply the best option, often the last resort, to save a dying tooth. Root canal treatments are prescribed only when necessary to ensure that all of our patients can use their natural teeth for as long as possible.

If you experience tooth pain or swelling or you suspect that you may have an infected tooth, contact us. Hot and cold pain can result from different things, yet it can also indicate an underlying problem that, if not resolved sooner rather than later, might result in the need for a root canal treatment. Sensitivity to hot food and cold drinks are among some of the signs of tooth decay. Another strong indication for tooth decay is sensitivity to sugary food.

When recovering from a root canal treatment, it is very important to look after your teeth. Your dentist will provide you with proper care and instructions for taking care of your teeth and any pain you may experience after your procedure.

Our high success rate for root canal treatments results from the many years of experience our Endodontist has. If you need a dental examination related to any pain that may suggest a root canal, book an appointment with us today.
