Composite Veneers UK – Here is your Ultimate Guide

Composite Veneers

A nice smile can bring out the best in everyone! When you smile, you invite people into a safe space, you’re approachable, and make other people feel more comfortable. On a personal level, it helps to boost your confidence, attitude and general health of your teeth!

A Smile Makeover is commonly thought of as purely cosmetic, but in reality, this reference includes a series of dental procedures performed on both single and multiple teeth to improve not only the appearance but also the health of your teeth and gums.

What are Veneers?

A veneer is a porcelain casing that is attached to your natural tooth. You can get them on a single tooth that is maybe discoloured or sits in front/behind other teeth. Or you can get them on an entire row of teeth. The finishing product is a white, clean and perfectly smooth tooth that if done well – like we do here at Maida Smiles – can last you decades.

For those of you who may need some association…veneers are like artificial finger nails. Not only are they similar in the sense of how they are fitted, but also in terms of their effect. They make your nails look and feel strong and can improve the confidence of those who are wearing them.

Some of you may need them because you struggle with your natural nails. Maybe you constantly chew them, or they are always breaking because they are so weak, then doing something as simple as getting your nails done can be life changing. The same goes for veneers. Some people wouldn’t consider it, while others would do anything to achieve a smile that improves their confidence and makes their life better.

Why would you get a veneer?

People may choose to alter their smile for any number of reasons to improve chewing, fill gaps from removed teeth, or to improve the health of teeth and gums.

Unfortunately some people aren’t born with strong and healthy teeth and gums. They experience a lot of damage over the years and veneers are a quick and effective solution to stained, chipped, misshapen or crooked teeth. They can also be used to cover gaps in teeth where orthodontic treatment may not be suitable.

What is the process of treatment and how are Veneers fitted?

You will have an initial assessment where the Dentist checks the health of your jaw, gum foundation and teeth using a combination of visual and x-ray. They will then talk you through the treatment plan, discuss any other treatment options that may also need to be considered, what to expect during and after your treatment and then answer any questions you may have. If you have any other treatments that need to be completed before the veneers this would also be discussed and scheduled.

Shape, size and colour will then be discussed with the dentist, usually this is kept as close to your original teeth as possible, leaving you with a natural looking smile. However, there are many different options for your smile makeover that you can choose, some even choosing ‘Hollywood style’ for their most desired outcome.

Following your consultation and planning, the next stage is to prepare your teeth for the treatment.

This involves filing down the teeth, most often this is accompanied by a local anaesthetic. However not always, because the filing does not go past the enamel. The patient shouldn’t experience any pain, and therefore this procedure can be performed without anaesthetic. The amount that is removed by the filing will be the same thickness as the veneer so it feels as normal as your natural teeth after the treatment is completed.

The dentist will then take an impression of your mouth so the bespoke veneer can be fitted perfectly to your teeth. A temporary cover will be placed over your tooth while this is being prepared.

Finally in order to fit the veneer, the area will be roughed, cleaned and polished so the bonding agent sticks better. The veneer will then be attached to each individual tooth and adjusted as necessary, before being permanently secured in place.

Before you leave there will be a final check for any adjustments, a bite assessment and thorough review to ensure you are comfortable and happy with the finished product.
