What are dental implants? Trends & Information

But aren’t Dental Implants painful?

Let’s step into the future with Dental Implants

Remember when you used to sneak into your grandparent’s bedroom to wake them up in the morning and you would see your Grandpa’s teeth sitting in a glass next to his bed. It’s not a memory that you tend to forget.

Well those teeth sitting in that glass are called dentures. They are false teeth that can be removed at night when you sleep and then put back in the next day. People have them done when they want to fill in the gaps of their missing teeth or get a full set. What you may not know is that its not just for grandparents. People as young as 30 can get dentures after they’ve lost teeth from advanced gum disease or decay.

But what if you don’t have to remove them at night? Thanks to technology dentistry has come a long way since those days when you were a kid, thank goodness! and we are lucky here at Maida Smiles to have one of the few Dentists in the country who can perform Dental Implants.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a long-term artificial replacement for missing or extracted teeth. They are placed directly into your jawbone where they substitute for the root of your missing teeth.

Due to the advancement in technology instead of wearing removable dentures, permanent implants can now be fitted into the patient. If a candidate has no health issues to prevent him or her from healing, and has a good bone structure, then they are a good candidate for implants.

Dental implants also help restore your jawbone structure because they reduce the burden on the remaining teeth and preserve natural tooth tissue.

Your new teeth will look and feel natural, and many patients have even reported improved speech and breathing because of their new implants. But you’ll still have to take just as much care as if they were your own teeth. Remember to see the dentist regularly, ensure proper hygiene and quit those bad habits that could ruin your new implants.

Why would you need a dental implant?

When you lose a tooth, the surrounding teeth have to adapt to deal with the increased pressure and stress. This can make your teeth susceptible to cracking, cavities and infection. Many patients who have lost teeth over the years, without realising it, adjust their bite by only chewing on one side, this can cause jaw and bone muscles to weaken. When we neglect the jaw, even on one side, inner bone and connective tissue becomes delicate.

In addition, teeth support each other and prevent surrounding teeth from moving apart. When one is lost, they begin to move causing misalignment and further sensitivity. Implants work as a replacement to natural teeth, and restores the balance of a patient’s dental structure. So it’s not just for cosmetic purposes, getting dental implants can actually prevent further damage to your teeth and jawline.

Why Maida Smiles is the go-to clinic for Dental Implants?

Aside from the fact that very few Dentists offer this particular treatment in the UK. Maida Smiles also is equipped with an advanced x-ray machine called a Dental Cone Beam computed tomography (CT) which is used in situations where regular dental or facial x-rays are not enough. Your doctor may use this technology to produce three dimensional images of your teeth, soft tissues, nerve pathways and bone in a single scan. It also has the advantage of lower radiation exposure compared to conventional CT. Other benefits of using this type of scan is that a single scan can produce a wide variety of angles that can be manipulated to provide a more complete assessment. The scan can show the bone and soft tissue at the same time and no radiation remains in the patient’s body after the examination.  In other words, the more accurate the scan the better success your surgery will be.

How long do implants last?

If you continue to take care of your teeth with regular brushing and flossing, then the implant screw itself can last a lifetime. The crown, or dentures usually lasts about 10 to 15 years before they may need a replacement due to wear and tear.
