In this case, a local dentist can perform the extraction properly and safely. However, if the tooth that needs to be extracted is damaged, hidden, or infected, the extraction falls under the category of surgical. A surgical extraction involves a small incision into the gum to remove the tooth. In some cases, the surgeon may need to remove some of the bone around the tooth or cut the tooth to remove it.
