What do if you break your veneer
It’s recommended that you see a dentist as soon as possible to preserve the integrity of your underlying tooth, which will be left exposed if the veneer has fallen off.
As a thin portion of enamel has been removed, your tooth might feel sensitive. However, that said, a broken veneer is not always classed as an emergency, as the underlying tooth is not in immediate or serious danger.
But we understand for aesthetic purposes that a broken veneer should be treated quickly and efficiently so you can progress with your day-to-day.
We particularly advise seeing the dentist if:
- Most of the veneer has fractured, broken, cracked, crazed or chipped.
- A portion of the veneer has broken off.
- The veneer has completely debonded (come off).
- Consequences of poor design or placement.
- You grind your teeth
- You’ve bitten too forcefully into hard foods.
- Trauma or sudden impact to the face
- As a result of tooth decay underneath the veneer.
- Veneers are old and have reached their time of replacement.
Veneers, in many circumstances are not repairable. Therefore, a damaged veneer should be replaced if polishing or re-cementing a fractured veneer is not possible.
Temporary fixes can include temporary placements or composite bonding while we make your new veneer, which can be as fast as 24 hours.
- First, make sure to carefully remove the remains of the veneer from your mouth and store the pieces safely, for example, wrapped in tissue. If the veneer is intact, we might be able to reattach it.
- Investigate the sharpness of your tooth, if it’s irritating your cheeks, tongue or gums make sure to come in faster, or dental wax can be purchased to stop the irritation momentarily.
- In the time it takes to reach your appointment, limit the biting forces, chewing and your tooth’s exposure.
- As enamel has been removed, limit your exposure to hot or cold beverages or air as this could trigger sensitivity.

I’ve been receiving orthodontic treatment for about a year now with Dr. Ines and she’s a wonderful mixture of highly skilled and professional, very thorough, and gentle in her approach. She is also super personable and I always look forward to my monthly appointments with her. She’s made such a big improvement to my teeth and I’m very happy with my treatment so far — I highly recommend Dr. Ines.

I had the lovely Dr Shankar for a 4 month Invisalign treatment. I mainly had overcrowding that needed sorting out after having had braces as a teenager and not wearing my retainer. Dr Shankar was delightful and has a lovely energy about him that made me feel very comfortable throughout the whole process. He explained processes well and also gave good advice to help me make informed decisions. I would highly highly recommend him to anyone in the Maida Vale area!

Following a friend’s recommendation, I brought my eldest daughter to Dr Ines do Carmo for orthodontic treatment.
Ines has been brilliant throughout the treatment; she is incredibly passionate about her work and this is reflected in her skilled perfectionism and the amazing results she achieves for her patients. From the start, Ines’ warm and friendly manner succeeded in putting my apprehensive daughter at ease. She was also forthcoming and thorough in her explanations of the treatment, and happy to share her extensive knowledge.
