What to expect

Our Periodontists receive extensive training in treating problems relating to the gums. If they are Periodontist Specialists, that training usually includes three additional years of education beyond the Dental University degree to become a qualified Dentist. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures.
Periodontists often treat more problematic periodontal cases, such as those with severe gum disease or a complex medical history. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (in which the infected surface of the root is cleaned) or root surface debridement (in which damaged tissue is removed).
They can also treat patients with severe gum problems using various surgical procedures. In addition, periodontists are specially trained in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants.

The gums: checks to see if there is any gum line recession.

The periodontist will also take a small measuring instrument called a probe and place it between the teeth and gums to determine the depth of those spaces, known as periodontal pockets; this helps the periodontist assess the health of the gums.
X-rays may also be taken to observe the health of the bone below the gum line.

Periodontitis signs

Periodontitis is a serious infection of the gums. It’s caused by bacteria that have been allowed to accumulate on your teeth and gums.
As periodontitis progresses, your bones and teeth recede. However, the damage can be stopped if periodontitis is treated early and proper oral hygiene is maintained.

Periodontal pocket reduction procedures — also called osseous surgery — help limit the space around your tooth’s root where bacteria can form

Non-surgical

Scaling and root planing are non-surgical treatments to remove plaque and tartar from deep under the gum line. Depending on the case, these procedures are sometimes paired with antimicrobial or antibiotic medicines.
A periodontist could also prescribe a tray delivery system for you to wear at home. This custom-fit impression of your teeth puts prescription medication right on them.

I had the lovely Dr Shankar for a 4 month Invisalign treatment. I mainly had overcrowding that needed sorting out after having had braces as a teenager and not wearing my retainer. Dr Shankar was delightful and has a lovely energy about him that made me feel very comfortable throughout the whole process.
