Gum disease is a hugely common condition where gums become tender, swollen, sore or infected. Many adults in the UK have gum disease or will experience it to some degree at least once.
And while we do not recommend self-diagnosis, we would encourage you to read through the symptoms below and get in touch with us immediately if you experience any of them:
Early symptoms – gingivitis:
Advanced symptoms – periodontitis:
Don’t fear bad teeth – get them seen. Speak to a London dentist.
If you suspect that you have gum disease, then you need to speak to a dentist urgently. Full stop.
The early stages of gum disease (gingivitis) are when gums begin to swell and bleed easily. But during this stage, the disease is still reversible and can be eliminated through professional cleaning at our dental office.
Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis, and it takes no prisoners. Periodontitis worsens over time and causes the loss of tissue and bone that support your teeth. So, if your teeth feel loose or begin moving around in your mouth, your condition has likely progressed.
Aggressive periodontitis is a destructive form of periodontal disease, where teeth begin to fall out due to a rapid loss of tissue and bone in particular mouth areas.
Standard treatment for gum disease will see our hygienists remove all plaque and tartar from your teeth. You will also be taught how to remove plaque successfully at home through improved cleaning and oral hygiene.
It may take a few sessions with our oral health team to reverse gingivitis. This, paired with an excellent oral care routine at home, will be the best prevention method in stopping your gum disease from getting worse.
Ignoring the problem will only make things worse. Initially, gum disease does not usually cause pain, but as it progresses, you’ll notice your teeth get more sensitive and black triangular pockets form between teeth.
Pus oozing from gums or gum abscesses with this condition is not uncommon. When the disease goes untreated for prolonged periods, it becomes tough to treat. Trust us here – we’re not trying to scare you but to educate you on the consequences of gum disease.
Our talented dentists will be there every step to help you achieve a healthier, fuller and happier smile.
Not only do our general dentistry treatments like periodontal therapy solve a range of problems before they seriously damage your dentition, but they also help improve the appearance of your teeth, helping you to feel more confident with your self-image.
