Public Recommendation

Many people find braces are easier to manage, because they don’t need to be removed when eating or drinking. This is a better option for patients who are less inclined to stick to the routine of removing and reinstalling the Invisalign aligners after each meal.

Patients of all ages can visit our clinic and our dentists are happy to assess and discuss your preferred option with you, whether it is a fixed brace or a removable appliance.

More About Orthodontics

Our team is ready to do whatever it takes to help you achieve the smile you always wanted!

When it comes correcting a misaligned smile, patients are often torn between the two popular options – Braces and Invisalign.

Although it is difficult to determine the best option before your consultation, both of these come with their own set of benefits.

Deciding which one is best for you will depend on a number of factors.

Read on to discover the main differences between the two, and make a more informed decision.

The Basics:

Braces are traditionally made of metal and attached to the outside of the teeth. Having said that, our clinic is equipped with a variety of other options including ceramic and lingual (behind the teeth) braces to meet a range of patient demands.

Constant pressure is applied by the system of brackets and wires to gradually move the teeth into their set position. It seemed, up until the start of the 21st Century, braces were the only option for those who need to straighten and correct their teeth. However, the industry was transformed just before the year 2000 with the release of Invisalign.

The History:

Founded in 1997, the cultural phenomenon sparked by this new treatment option began as two Stanford students with no previous experience in orthodontics created the first effective metal-free alternative.

An Invisalign treatment uses clear, plastic aligners. The aligners are made to order for each patient using a 3D scan of their mouth. The customised aligners are then made to move the teeth in small steps until the correct position is reached.

Invisalign

Invisalign® is an innovative and technically advanced alignment system consisting of clear, nearly invisible trays.

These removable, completely custom designed trays, or aligners, are meticulously engineered from a highly elastic, transparent and clinically tested material for ultimate style, discretion, movement control and comfort throughout the treatment.

After an initial digital scan or dental imprint of your current teeth positions, a digital image of the desired final result is generated. Together these form the basis for the design of the aligners, which are changed every 1-2 weeks, gradually straightening your teeth and transforming your smile.

Frequent Questions

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

No, orthodontic treatment does not hurt, although you may at specific stages throughout your treatment experience some temporary discomfort. This is usually around the time you have your braces tightened or you are given your next set of aligners and lasts for 2 days or so. This discomfort can be easily treated with over-the-counter pain relief, such as Paracetamol if deemed necessary.

Can children benefit from orthodontics?

Yes, at Maida Smiles Clinic we say the earlier the better. Early diagnosis allows our orthodontists to identify potential problems and plan for easier and quicker orthodontic treatments. UK health guidelines recommend every child has an orthodontic assessment between the ages of 7 and 11 while their teeth and jaws are still developing. This may result in them receiving preliminary treatment to avoid misaligned/crooked teeth problems later on, but more often than not it allows for both the child and parents, as well as the orthodontist, to prepare for possible braces treatment if need be.
