Dental Implant Rejection

Worried your implant is failing?

Learn what to do if your dental implant is failing and if you’ll require a second opinion.

Are you worried that your body is rejecting a dental implant? How do you know if this is happening?

Here are the signs of a failed or failing dental implant…

  • The dental implant is loose or wobbly
  • You feel movement with your implant when you chew or talk
  • You’re in severe pain or discomfort (first week after surgery)
  • The gums around the dental implant are swollen, bleeding or inflamed
  • You have persistent bad breath and a bad taste in your mouth
  • There’s pus around your gums, or you’re running a fever
  • Gums around the implant are beginning to recede
  • You find it hard to chew or bite down

It’s important to know that dental infections can occur at any time after the procedure and should be treated immediately. Infections around the dental implant are referred to as peri-implantitis.

What happens if your implant fails?

Is it an emergency?

If your implant fails, it’s bad news – and failure can happen for many reasons, whether it’s the fault of the patient with poor aftercare, the fault of the dentist from lack of planning, or the fault of no one but nature.

Whatever the reason, your dental implant has failed, and you likely need it removed or fixed.

The appropriate next step will depend on why it failed and when the failure occurred. For example, if your dental implant has failed after recently being implanted, it’s likely due to a problem with osseointegration or likely because of an infection.

Dental implants that fail later down the line are often caused by insufficient bone grade or other medical conditions like diabetes.

The best next step is to schedule a visit with a dentist. If you don’t feel comfortable going back to the dentist who placed your implant, you can always seek a second opinion.

Treatment options for failed implants

Solutions for every cause

  • Failed implants can be removed and taken out under local anaesthetic.
  • Failed dental implants can be replaced after we treat the cause of the failure.

If, upon investigation, we find that the bone around the dental implant is not intact, we might recommend pre-implant procedures like a bone graft or a sinus lift to improve the location site before replacing your dental implant.

The first thing we’ll do is take an X-ray to examine what’s going on under the surface. Book an appointment.

Replace or fix failed implants

At Maida Smiles Clinic in London, our lead implantologist, Dr Pedro Gutierres, is the go-to dentist for anything implant-related.

Being the dentist, patients choose for complex restorations, cases and fixes. You can trust you’re in safe hands with us.

We offer second opinion appointments for patients, exactly in your situation, where their implant has failed, or they’ve had botched dental work from going abroad, for example.

We’re the dentists who help when other dentists say no. We’ve even had patients travel to our clinic from far and wide to be treated by Dr Gutierres, where they’ll know they’ll be taken care of and out of pain in no time at all.

Who is responsible for dental implant failure in the UK?

It can sometimes be difficult to point fingers when it comes to dental implant failure. Who’s responsible will depend on the circumstances, meaning it could be the fault of the patient, the dentist, the manufacturer, or even nature—as sometimes the intricate process of healing does not perform as expected.

The finger is usually pointed at the patient when poor oral hygiene has been carried out, smoking or failure to adhere to post-operative instructions.

So, if you’ve smoked or not followed aftercare guidelines, then you might not have a claim for dental negligence. It’s only the dentists’ fault if they fail to check the density of the bone before recommending and pursuing the procedure.

Many dental implant brands and systems have guarantees and warranties that cover them, so if there’s a problem with the manufacturing side, you’ll be covered nonetheless.
