When correcting a misaligned smile, patients are often torn between the two popular options – Braces and Invisalign. Although it is difficult to determine the best option before your consultation, both have benefits. Deciding which one is best for you will depend on several factors. Braces are traditionally made of metal and attached to the outside of the teeth. The system of brackets and wires applies constant pressure to move the teeth into their set position gradually.Until the start of the 21st Century, braces seemed the only option for those who needed to straighten and correct their teeth. However, the industry was transformed just before 2000 with the release of Invisalign. Founded in 1997, the cultural phenomenon sparked by this new treatment option began when two Stanford students with no experience in orthodontics created the first effective metal-free alternative.Invisalign treatment uses clear, plastic aligners. The aligners are made to order for each patient using a 3D scan of their mouth.
A commonly asked question is, ‘Do I have to wear the retainers all the time?’ and the answer is ‘No’. You can take the aligners off during meal times, but be sure to put them back on as soon as possible after eating. However, to achieve the desired results, Invisalign does need to be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day. This also means that you are not required to change your diet. In comparison, wearing traditional braces may sometimes make chewing some foods difficult or uncomfortable.
As much of the orthodontic work occurs before you receive your retainers, physical visits to the dentist can be kept to a minimum. Braces can sometimes surpass the results achieved by Invisalign retainers. This is mainly because they use more force to move teeth into the desired position. If you need to address issues with your back teeth, rotate, or move teeth vertically, Invisalign is unlikely to be a viable option. I loved my first visit to Maida Smile Dental Clinic. The staff member at reception was very warm, welcoming and professional. My dentist, Priscilla, and her assistant were fantastic. I have quite sensitive teeth near my gums and I can find the probing and investigation quite uncomfortable during a consultation, but this wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t experience discomfort and felt in very safe hands. This also applied to the hygienist work. I didn’t even have to ask Priscilla to avoid using the ultra sound cleaner on the sensitive areas of my teeth. I’m looking forward to going back, and that’s not often you can say that about going to the dentist!
