Which denture you should choose must align with your condition (one missing tooth versus several) and the quality of life you want to achieve. You don’t have to have dentures to know that they can be loose, uncomfortable, and even embarrassing—and many of our patients purely want an aesthetic fix and a good-functioning smile, too.
Guide to denture options
Conventional full dentures (traditional options)
These traditional dentures replace a complete set of missing teeth. Sitting on top of the gums and not anchored to existing teeth, these dentures rely on suction to keep them in place. Conventional dentures can often be fitted within 8-12 weeks of teeth being extracted or missing.
Problem with conventional dentures:
Partial dentures
Partial dentures are prescribed in cases where a patient still has some of their natural teeth remaining, for example, when one or more teeth remain in the upper or lower jaws.
For this type of denture, a pink-coloured base is attached to a metal piece, which holds the denture in the mouth. Again, these dentures are not fixed and are removable. Partial dentures can also help prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting out of position and are made from acrylic.
Custom-made dentures
If you’re looking for a pricier solution to replace missing teeth, custom dentures might be a better option as they use higher quality materials to mimic natural-looking smiles better. Patients can design and see the denture before it’s completed – and as the denture is completely customisable, it can suit your needs better.
Immediate dentures
Immediate dentures describe the type of denture placed on the same day your teeth are pulled or extracted. Explore same-day dentures.
Implant-supported dentures or snap-in dentures
Implant-retained dentures use dental implants to secure the denture firmly in place, which provides an excellent, solid foundation that prevents the denture from moving or slipping. The final restoration is natural-looking, mimicking natural teeth and will typically last a lifetime.
Snap-in dentures are probably the most effective when it comes to stability in your range of options, as again, they stay securely in place with the help of dental implants, or in other cases, they can anchor onto existing teeth.
Snap-in dentures are unique, as they have locator attachments embedded into the tissue of the denture. These attachments snap onto the implants or the locator receptors, making them more convenient and removable, like partial dentures.
Snap-in dentures are recommended for patients who do not have remaining teeth left but still have enough bone to support a dental implant.
All on 4 hybrid dentures
These hybrid dentures are by far the most advanced on the market and are typically the most expensive. But what patients pay for is the littlest degree of movement possible. Even with snap-in dentures, there will be some degree of movement because they are removable. However, with All on Four hybrid dentures, which use only four implants to anchor a denture permanently, it’s better.
Palateless dentures
Palateless dentures involve any upper denture that has no place blocking the upper palate and can refer to denture types that use implants, tooth-retained overdentures or fixed and removable devices. See dentures you can wear all the time.
