Partial Dentures: Options, Types and Cost

A partial denture is a removable appliance that replaces one or more missing teeth when you still have some natural teeth left. It is usually held in place by small clasps that grip neighbouring teeth, or in some designs by a flexible gum coloured base. If you have lost a few teeth and want to chew, speak and smile with more confidence, a partial denture is one of several ways to do it.

The NHS describes partial dentures as replacing one or more missing teeth, with some designs clipping on to your remaining teeth. This page explains the main types, how they look and feel, what to expect while you get used to them and what they cost at Maida Smiles.

Who needs a partial denture?

Partial dentures are for people who have lost some, but not all, of their natural teeth. Losing even one or two teeth can have a ripple effect. Chewing becomes less efficient, neighbouring teeth may tilt or drift into the gap, and the tooth opposite the gap can grow out of position. Many people also simply want their smile back.

You might be a good candidate if you have several teeth missing, if the gaps are at the back where a bridge would have nothing to hold on to, or if you would like a lower cost, less invasive route than surgery. We will check the health of your remaining teeth and gums first, as they provide the support.

What are partial dentures?

Partial dentures sit on your gums and fill the gaps left by missing teeth. Replacement teeth, usually made from acrylic or porcelain, are attached to a base. Because you can take them out to clean them, they are very different from fixed treatments such as a bridge, which the NHS says cannot be removed, or implants, which are anchored in the jawbone.

Replacing missing teeth does more than improve your smile. Gaps can make chewing harder, and neighbouring teeth can drift into the space over time. A well made partial denture helps share the biting load and can stop teeth moving.

Key takeaways

  • Partial dentures suit people who still have natural teeth. If you have none left, you would need complete dentures.
  • The three common materials are acrylic, metal (chrome cobalt) and flexible plastic. Each suits different mouths.
  • Expect an adjustment period. The Oral Health Foundation advises starting with soft foods and small bites.
  • Partial dentures usually need replacing every five to eight years as your mouth changes, according to the Oral Health Foundation.
  • Fixed options, such as a bridge or dental implant, are alternatives we can discuss with you.

Types of partial dentures

The Oral Health Foundation describes three main kinds of partial denture. Here is how they compare, and where to find more detail on each.

Acrylic

The most common type. A pink plastic base holds the teeth, held by small metal clasps.

Can feel bulkier and take longer to get used to. Usually the lower cost option.

Metal (chrome cobalt)

A thin metal framework with acrylic teeth and gum coloured sections.

Smaller, lighter and very stable. Needs strong natural teeth for support. Usually costs more than plastic.

Flexible

Soft, bendable plastic in a horseshoe shape, often without metal clasps.

May feel more comfortable and be less noticeable. Not suitable for every mouth.

You can read more about acrylic dentures, cobalt chrome dentures and flexible dentures individually. How partials compare with full dentures and implant supported options is covered in the different types of dentures.

Partial dentures for front teeth

Replacing front teeth is a different challenge from replacing back teeth, because they are seen every time you smile and talk. The most important questions are how natural the tooth looks, how the denture grips and whether clasps will show.

Metal clasps can sometimes be visible near the front of the mouth. Flexible designs avoid metal clasps, which is why some patients choose them for the front. Acrylic partials can be colour matched to your natural teeth. Your dentist can talk you through the options after looking at your gum shape, remaining teeth and bite.

Speech can feel different at first with any denture that sits near the front of your mouth. This usually improves as your tongue and lips adapt, and practising reading aloud can help. If you are replacing a single front tooth, a fixed alternative such as a bridge may be worth considering as well.

Choosing between acrylic, metal and flexible

The best material depends on your mouth and what matters most to you. These questions can help you think it through before your consultation.

  • How many teeth are missing, and where? A small gap at the back may suit a compact metal framework. A larger gap may need the stability of acrylic.
  • How strong are your remaining teeth? The Oral Health Foundation notes that metal types need strong natural teeth for support.
  • How visible will clasps be? If you are replacing teeth near the front, you may prefer a flexible design without metal clasps.
  • How important is size and weight? Metal frameworks are thinner and lighter, so many people find them less intrusive. Acrylic dentures can feel bulkier.
  • What is your budget? Acrylic is usually the lower cost option, and metal usually costs more, according to the Oral Health Foundation.

There is no perfect denture. Each choice involves a trade off, and we are happy to talk through yours, with no pressure to choose any particular type.

Partial denture, bridge or implant?

A partial denture is not the only way to fill a gap, and it is not always the best. The NHS describes the main choices like this: dentures are removable, bridges are fixed to neighbouring teeth, and implants are fixed into the jawbone to replace the root and can support crowns or some types of denture.

A denture is usually the simplest and least invasive route, and it keeps your options open for future treatment. A bridge feels more like your own teeth but involves preparing neighbouring teeth. An implant does not rely on adjacent teeth but involves surgery and a higher cost. You can see how bridge pricing compares in our dental bridge costs.

What to expect from treatment

Making a partial denture takes several appointments. Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums, check that any decay or gum problems are treated first, and discuss the design with you. Impressions or scans of your mouth are taken, a bite record is made, and the denture is made in the laboratory. You then have a fitting, often followed by adjustments.

Because dentures are custom made, you can usually try the teeth and shade before the final version is finished. Tell us if you have any preferences about the colour or shape of your teeth.

Getting used to your partial denture

It takes time to adapt. The Oral Health Foundation recommends starting with soft foods, cutting food into small pieces, chewing slowly on both sides and avoiding sticky or hard foods at first. The NHS says getting used to dentures can take a few weeks.

Mild soreness is common and is usually fixed with a small adjustment, so do come back and see us rather than put up with it. The NHS advises seeing your dentist if your denture slips, clicks, stops fitting or hurts.

Dentures soaking in a cleaning solution

Caring for partial dentures

Clean them every morning and evening. The NHS recommends using soft soap or washing up liquid, not toothpaste, which can be abrasive, and cleaning over a bowl of water or a towel in case you drop them. Rinse after meals. Remove them at night and keep them in water, damp cotton wool or a cleaning solution. Brush your gums, tongue and remaining natural teeth with fluoride toothpaste. Healthy natural teeth are what keep a partial denture stable, so look after them too.

For more day to day advice, see the information for denture wearers.

Looking after your remaining teeth and gums

A partial denture adds a surface that plaque can cling to, so cleaning matters even more than before. Brush your natural teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and clean your gums and tongue as the NHS advises. Clean the denture itself, as above, and take it out at night.

The Oral Health Foundation warns that poorly cleaned dentures can lead to denture stomatitis, a fungal infection that makes the gums under the denture red and sore. It recommends a non abrasive cleanser rather than toothpaste. Regular visits to a dentist and hygienist keep your remaining teeth healthy, and healthy teeth keep the denture stable.

Common problems and what to do

The NHS says to see a dentist if your denture slips, clicks, stops fitting or hurts. The most common issues are simple to fix.

  • Sore spots. A rubbing area can usually be eased with a quick adjustment. Do not try to file the denture yourself.
  • A loose fit. Dentures loosen as gums and bone change. Adjustment or relining may help.
  • A broken tooth or clasp. Many repairs can be done quickly, and a broken denture is something we can look at quickly.
  • Staining or odours. These usually point to a cleaning routine that needs a tweak, and your hygienist can help.

If a denture is no longer comfortable, please come and see us. Wearing a poorly fitting denture for a long time can irritate your gums.

How long do partial dentures last?

The Oral Health Foundation says dentures often need replacing every five to eight years, because the shape of your gums and jaw changes with time. Dentures that start to feel loose or look worn can often be adjusted or relined before a replacement is needed. Regular check ups let your dentist spot changes early.

How much do partial dentures cost?

At Maida Smiles, our current denture fees list acrylic dentures at £1,050 and chrome dentures at £1,250. [CONFIRM: whether these are the starting prices for a partial denture and how many teeth they cover, and the price of flexible partials] Your exact fee depends on the number of teeth you are replacing, the material and the design of the denture. We confirm it in writing at your consultation.

In England, NHS dentures fall under Band 3 when treatment is clinically necessary and provided by an NHS dentist, with a fixed charge set by the NHS. Because we are a private practice, our fees are private fees. You can see our denture costs in full, and treatment above £250 can be spread over 12 months with 0% finance.

Who are partial dentures suitable for?

They work for people who still have some natural teeth, as the Oral Health Foundation notes. The metal types need strong teeth for support. Your dentist will check the health of your gums and remaining teeth first, as decay and gum disease should be treated before dentures are fitted.

Partial dentures may not be the right option if your remaining teeth are loose, or if you would prefer a fixed solution. We are happy to explain the alternatives without any pressure.

What to ask at your consultation

  • How many teeth will the denture replace, and where will the clasps sit?
  • Which material do you recommend for my mouth, and why?
  • Will it be visible when I smile or speak?
  • How many appointments will I need, and when will it be ready?
  • Are adjustments after fitting included in the fee?
  • How do I clean it, and what should I avoid?
  • What would a bridge or implant involve for me, and what would it cost?

Asking these questions is not awkward. It is the best way to make sure the denture you receive is the one you expected.

What affects the price of a partial denture?

Fees vary because partial dentures are made individually. The number of teeth being replaced, the material (acrylic, metal or flexible), the complexity of the design, the laboratory work involved and the number of adjustment visits all play a part. A larger metal framework with several clasps usually takes longer and costs more than a small acrylic denture. This is why we confirm your fee after examining your mouth, rather than quoting a single figure for everyone.

Repairs, relining and replacement

Dentures are not permanent. Acrylic teeth wear, clasps can loosen or break, and your gums slowly change shape. Many problems can be put right without making a new denture. A repair can fix a crack or a broken tooth, and a reline refreshes the fit by adding material to the inside surface. If your denture needs more than that, or if it is several years old, a new one may be the better choice. Bring it along to a check up and we will tell you plainly which is which.

Partial denture FAQs

Are partial dentures noticeable?

Often not very. Flexible designs and well colour matched acrylic can blend in well, although clasps on metal or acrylic dentures may show when you smile widely. We talk through the look of each option with you before treatment.

Can I eat normally with a partial denture?

You can after a short adjustment period. Start with soft food, cut it small and chew on both sides. Avoid very sticky or hard foods in the first weeks.

Can I have a partial denture for just one tooth?

Yes, a one tooth partial denture is possible, though other options such as a bridge or implant may suit you better. Our guide to one tooth denture options explains how to choose.

Do I wear a partial denture at night?

Usually not. The NHS and the Oral Health Foundation both advise taking dentures out at night and storing them in water or a cleaning solution, which gives your gums a rest.

How long does it take to get used to partial dentures?

The NHS says it can take a few weeks. You may notice extra saliva, mild soreness and changes in speech at first. These tend to settle, and we can adjust the fit if needed.

How long do partial dentures last?

The Oral Health Foundation says dentures often need replacing every five to eight years as your mouth changes. Good care and regular dental check ups help.

Are partial dentures available on the NHS?

Yes, in England they fall under NHS Band 3 when clinically necessary. We are a private practice, so our fees are private. Our fee page shows the details.

I could not be more satisfied with my experience at Maida Smiles - A special mention to Dr Gurteurez who is one of the most friendly and professional dentists I have ever met

Adam

I had my first visit and the team was very warm, caring and professional. The online booking platform makes it very easy to arrange your appointment. Doctor Pedro made me feel comfortable despite this being my first appointment since Covid. He is incredibly knowledgeable and offers you the best treatment for your specific condition. I would highly recommend them

Gian Paolo Ziletti

Professional. Friendly. Informative. Maida Smiles offers great dental services including cleanings, oral surgery and realignment. I feel very lucky to have them so close by. I had an appointment just this week that was quick, thorough and safe.

Emily Chmura

Being very nervous about using dentists after a terrible experience when I was younger, I came to Maida Smiles and loved the calm patient demeanour of Pedro. You can clearly see Pedro and the team take pride in what they do and are perfectionists. The whole experience was great and I will never go to another dentist again.

Reena Nathwani

Delighted with the outcome of my treatment by Pedro. Meticulous attention to detail explaining exactly how the procedure would be carried out from first consultation to completion backed up with supporting guidance notes. Clearly an expert in his field and someone who cares passionately about the outcomes for his patients. Highly recommended.

I loved my first visit to Maida Smile Dental Clinic. The staff member at reception was very warm, welcoming and professional. My dentist, Priscilla, and her assistant were fantastic. I have quite sensitive teeth near my gums and I can find the probing and investigation quite uncomfortable during a consultation, but this wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t experience discomfort and felt in very safe hands. This also applied to the hygienist work. I didn’t even have to ask Priscilla to avoid using the ultra sound cleaner on the sensitive areas of my teeth. I’m looking forward to going back, and that’s not often you can say that about going to the dentist!

Since I first had the luck to be recommended and book an appointment with Dr. Pedro Gutierres over 8 years ago, I have never trusted my dental health nor my family’s to anyone else. It’s very hard to find a dentist who ticks all the boxes and even goes beyond any expectations you may have, from service, sympathy, professionalism, and expertise, etc., 5 stars are not enough to rate him. I was so happy when he opened his own clinic and surrounded himself with the best professionals you can find, I cannot recommend Maida Smiles Dental Clinic enough.

Sofia Gouveia

Maida Smiles Dental Clinic is excellent!! The staff is very friendly, professional and always aiming for the customers best experience! A special thank you to Dr. Pedro Gutierres who is truly amazing. I am absolutely satisfied with the results and highly recommend this great dental clinic!

Ana Cruz

Dr. Pedro Gutierres is the best Implantologist I have come across. His work is amazing and of very high quality! I would highly recommend him and Maida Smiles to all my friends and family. If you want the perfect smile this is the place to go.

Blossom

“Pedro was so patient and professional throughout my treatment for my implants.. I chose to have my treatment with a local anaesthetic rather than any sedation and have a very bad gag reflex when anything touches the back of my throat. His patience throughout the experience was wonderful, completely putting me at ease and he also gave me a technique to help me in the future. I have seen him for my follow up and fully intend to book an annual visit in 2020. which is no small thing as I live 60 miles away.I can thoroughly recommend him for any treatment.”

Denise Gilbert

I was very nervous to pull my ingrown wisdom tooth. Dr Pedro Guiterres made me feel really comfortable and the job was completed very professionally. It didn’t take long at all and I didn’t feel any pain. I would definitely recommend his service at this practice.

Jihan Daoud

They have been great in every step in FINALLY GETTING MY DREAM SMILE from the receptionist to my dentist Pedro Laranjeira I can’t thank you enough and of course Pedro Laranjeira beautiful wife…… they are very professional and understand that I had to change my appointment now and then for work commitments and they were very understand. I will defo recommend them 100% not forgetting how chic the office is

Tracy Mensah

I was very nervous about having a dental implant but was immediately put at ease by Dr Pedro Gutierres. The procedure was explained in full and the care both during and after treatment has been of the highest standard. I received advice on how to look after my implant and have had no problems. I highly recommend.

Dawn Briggs

I had 7 implants installed by Dr Pedro Gutierres, including one which required a bone graft. In my 70 years I’ve had some bad experiences with dental treatment so it takes a lot for me to relax but, from my initial consultation, through to the end of the treatment, I had complete trust in Pedro’s expertise: preparations for the treatment and after-care were extremely thorough and fully explained, the treatment itself was surprisingly endurable (considering what was involved) and the implants have made a major difference to my life. If you are considering implants then I would whole-heartedly and sincerely recommend Pedro for this work.

Russ Hickman

I couldn’t recommend Maida Smiles enough: the care, attention to detail and the way Dentists and Nurses made sure I felt comfortable and safe throughout the treatments was incredible. Dr Pedro explained the treatments in detail to me and I have never felt under pressure to proceed… but I am very glad I did as I am happy and confident to smile again!

Mariana Pinheiro

Highly recommend this place to anybody looking for a friendly and trustworthy practice with an incredibly friendly and patient staff. Dr Pedro has been one of the best dentists I’ve ever had, he made me feel comfortable and were very knowledgeable in explaining every step of what he was doing and answering all of my questions. Amazing thorough the procedure, excellent communication, superb and professional treatment. I hope they keep it this way for a long time.

Joas Souza

Dr Pedro is a very good, confident and experienced professional. I’ve known him for some years now and always felt well cared for, either for small or bigger treatments.‍The facilities of the clinic are amazing and all the staff are very friendly. Highly recommended.”

Nelson Cafruni

I went to different clinics before, and nobody could really convince me until Maida Smiles did. The team here makes you comfortable , shows you different options and different budgets , and doesn't try to make you go only for one plan. I felt that the team was knowledgeable and wanted to help me , so that's why I decided to start

Diogo

I was referred to Dr. Pedro who did such a wonderful job with my teeth. The staff was extremely professional, they put you at ease, and it just made the whole experience easier. I've never looked back since

Theresa

"I told him, 'I want beautiful teeth, beautiful but natural, I don't want fake looking teeth.' Now I smile, I talk... it just makes you more confident. If you wear a beautiful nice suit... you have beautiful teeth, then it's like a perfect."

Louca

"I went to my hygienist a little while ago, and she said to me they were the best implants that she'd ever seen and she would never have known that they weren't my real teeth."

Sharon

Dr. Pedro explained the process of Invisalign to me. It sounded easy, it was quite a quick process, and the end result is my teeth moved back, so I'm quite happy.

Soula

I feel like I've not just developed a professional relationship with my dentist and the staff... they become more like friends as well, because of the kind of compassion and sympathy that they give you during treatment.

Alvin

"After a friend recommended the clinic, I was referred to Dr. Pedro, who did such a wonderful job with my teeth. The staff was extremely professional; they put you at ease, and it just made the whole experience easier. They have more than met my expectations. I have to have a few more implants, and I'm not afraid anymore. Now, finally, I can live again."

Lesley

"After not having a great experience with previous dental treatments, I was desperate for someone that I trusted. I broke a tooth, and even before I saw Dr. Pedro, he reassured me that I was going to be fine. He made me feel very comfortable and at ease. It was an amazing experience, from not only Dr. Pedro but also all the staff in the clinic, and I would definitely recommend [them] ".

Mariana

I chose Maida Smiles because of the reviews and a friend who was really happy with the results. The results definitely met my expectations. My expressions are much more smooth than before and it really makes the difference

Carolina

I’m very grateful for the quick and efficient service I received when I needed an emergency appointment. The staff were kind and accommodating, and the dentist provided clear, helpful advice that made a real difference. The whole experience was reassuring. Highly recommend their professionalism and expertise!

Safiya Guled

I am always anxious when having to see the dentist and this was one of my first experiences with Maida Smiles. The dentist, Benedict Harrison was very reassuring and immediately put me at ease. He was quite lucid in his explanations of what had to be done, etcetera, and is making good progress with the ongoing treatment. Also, the rest of the staff were friendly and just plain nice.

John Jacobs

Wow wow Dr Claudia is the best dentist in London, my kid adores her and it is always a pleasant visit. Can’t recommend her enough

Bel Cohn

I am delighted with the results of my replacement veneers.

Dr Benedict Harrison was very good at talking me through the whole process and keeping me informed during the treatment if there were any issues - which there weren’t.

He has a charming demeanour which is an added advantage in a dentist, who I think we all agree are not our favourite people, overall a 5 star experience.

Karen Shepherd

I went to the Maida Smiles Clinic for the first time and had the most wonderful experience! I am dentist phobic but strangely left the place with a big smile on my face (literally!). The receptionist was super kind, Susan was impeccable and very helpful, and I had my appointment with the most amazing dentist Dr Mafalda Vilhena. Couldn’t recommend her enough. She explains the whole procedure and is very rigorous in her work. Congratulations to Dr Pedro Gutierres for creating such an excellent working environment and to all the team. I will be back and bringing my family along and we don’t even live in Maida Vale. Thank you for such an impeccable job on my teeth and for taking my fear of dentists away. Note: they don’t cover NHS, only private bookings or with insurance.
