Special Interests
Periodontal Disease and Treatment Gum disease is a common condition caused by bacteria building up around the teeth, leading to inflammation, bleeding, and, if untreated, damage to the bone supporting the teeth. Treatment focuses on removing these bacteria through specialist cleaning and improving daily oral hygiene. This helps stop the disease progressing and allows the gums to heal, helping you keep your teeth for longer. Periodontal Pocket Management Surgery When deep gum pockets remain after initial treatment, surgery may be needed to access and clean areas that cannot be reached otherwise. This involves gently lifting the gum to remove infection and, in some cases, reshaping or regenerating the supporting bone. The aim is to reduce pocket depth, make cleaning easier, and improve long-term stability of your teeth. Gum Graft (Gum Recession Treatment) Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue moves away from the tooth, exposing the root and causing sensitivity or aesthetic concerns. Gum grafting is a procedure that restores lost gum tissue, often using tissue from the palate or a biomaterial. This helps protect the teeth, reduce sensitivity, and improve the appearance of your smile. Crown Lengthening (Gummy Smile Treatment) Crown lengthening is a minor surgical procedure used to reshape the gum and sometimes bone to expose more of the tooth. It can improve the appearance of a “gummy smile” or allow damaged teeth to be restored properly. The result is a more balanced smile and better access for long-term dental treatment. Peri-Implant Disease Management Peri-implant disease affects the gums and bone around dental implants and can lead to implant failure if left untreated. Early stages can often be managed with professional cleaning, while more advanced cases may require surgical treatment to clean the area and restore lost bone or gum tissue. Early diagnosis and regular maintenance are key to keeping implants healthy long-term Dr Neves also holds a Master’s degree and a PhD in stem cell biology and regenerative treatments (King’s College London). He uses his scientific knowledge as the foundation of his clinical practice, ensuring that all treatments provided are evidence-based. Dr Neves currently works as Head of Periodontics at the University of Sheffield and as an Honorary Consultant in Periodontology at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital. In clinical practice, he focuses on the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gum disease, regenerative periodontal surgery, mucogingival surgery (treatment of gum recession), gummy smile management, and the management of peri-implant diseases such as peri-implantitis. He has a particular interest in helping patients retain their natural teeth wherever possible and in managing complex cases requiring advanced periodontal care. Dr Neves is committed to providing clear communication, high-quality treatment, and a calm, patient-centred approach.
