What are cobalt chrome dentures? Everything you need to know

A cobalt-chrome denture is a medically approved, modern partial denture type made from light alloy metals like cobalt and chromium. Cobalt chrome dentures are better quality than acrylic but cost more.

However, the improvements are worth the price. They are only available through private practices like ours and cost from £1,250.

How do cobalt chrome dentures work?

Understanding the prosthetic

  • Require support for remaining teeth
  • Metal partial dentures which use clasps to stay in place
  • Perfect treatment solution for patients with partial tooth loss
  • Lightweight dentures that are typically unnoticeable
  • Cobalt dentures require more care as they’re made from metal
  • Cobalt chrome dentures can last up to 20 years

Cobalt chrome dentures are typically recommended in cases where natural teeth remain, as they rely on natural teeth for stability and retention through clasps.

The denture replaces missing teeth via a strong, thin metal framework, which offers better retention and stability and prevents the denture from moving around when you eat and speak.

However, the fact they use a metal framework can sometimes put patients off, but aesthetically, they’re sound – this is because, in most cases, we put clasps on the back teeth, which avoid any visibility.

Are you a suitable candidate?

  • You have a sensitive gag reflex
  • You have missing teeth in the lower jaw
  • You have compromised muscle control
  • You still have natural teeth remaining with a good prognosis
  • Your mouth and oral structure are unlikely to change

Why patients think Cobalt Chrome dentures are better

  • More comfortable and thinner, making them less intrusive
  • Suitable for patients with sensitive gag reflexes
  • They cover less surface area, keeping more of the palate exposed
  • Designed to eliminate gum or mouth irritation
  • The metal structure is lighter and less bulky, making it easily hidden
  • Best possible grip and resistance to chewing force
  • Easiest type of denture for patients to adapt to
  • The most hygienic type of denture offered
  • The longest-lasting removable denture

Cobalt's limits

One disadvantage of cobalt chrome dentures is that they’re not easy to change. If your mouth changes over time, for example, through further tooth loss, movement, or gum shrinkage, you might require a new set of dentures rather than an adjustment.
