What are immediate dentures?
An immediate denture is a type of temporary denture. It is made from impressions of your mouth taken before the teeth come out, then fitted at the same appointment that your teeth are removed. This is quite different from a conventional denture, which is only made once your gums have healed and which, according to the NHS, usually takes a few weeks to make, followed by a fitting appointment.
Immediate dentures can replace all of your teeth in one arch, or some of them, when they are used as partial dentures. You can see how they fit alongside complete, partial and implant supported options in the different types of dentures.
What does "same day" really mean?
Many people hear "same day dentures" and picture walking in with a problem and leaving with a finished set. The reality is slightly different. The denture is made in advance, so there are appointments before the day of surgery. Bristol Dental School says immediate dentures usually need about two appointments, compared with at least six for a custom made denture. The NHS says they are usually made within a few days.
The "same day" part is that you have the denture fitted on the day your teeth are extracted.
Step by step: from consultation to fitting
Every case is different, but the journey generally looks like this.
- Consultation. We examine your mouth, review scans or images and discuss which teeth need to come out and why. We also talk about alternatives, so you are able to choose.
- Impressions and design. Impressions of your mouth are taken, and we agree the look of the teeth, including shade and shape.
- Laboratory stage. The denture is made in the laboratory while you wait for the extraction appointment.
- Extraction and fitting. Your teeth are removed under local anaesthetic, with sedation available if you need it, and the denture is placed straight away.
- Review. We check how you are healing and adjust the denture as needed.

What it feels like at first
Be prepared for the first days to feel strange. The denture may feel bulky, and your mouth will be sore from the extractions. Speech is affected at first, and eating needs patience. A patient information leaflet from Oxfordshire Community Dental Service says that adapting takes "time, patience and perseverance", a good phrase to keep in mind.
The leaflet also makes honest points that are rarely on clinic websites. The fit may not be perfect, because the dentist cannot see the final shape of your gums before the teeth come out. In some cases the denture may need to be remade. Lower dentures are usually looser than upper ones.
The first 24 hours and the first week
Dental school guidance advises keeping the denture in for the first 24 hours after the extractions. Swelling can build quickly, and if you take the denture out, it may not go back in. It also helps to control bleeding and protect the sockets. After that, your dentist will tell you when to remove it, and how to clean it.
Eat soft foods and take pain relief as advised. Do not use ordinary toothpaste or hot water to clean the denture, as the Oxfordshire leaflet explains. What if the denture does not fit well?
Occasionally an immediate denture does not fit as well as hoped, or needs more adjustment than expected. The Oxfordshire leaflet is frank about this, noting that in some cases it may need to be remade. If yours feels uncomfortable, rubs or will not stay in, come back and see us as soon as you can. Small adjustments often make a big difference, and the sooner we see you, the easier it is to put right.
Healing, relining and replacement
Your gums shrink as the sockets heal, and the bone underneath changes over the following months. As a result, an immediate denture becomes looser. According to the Oxfordshire leaflet, a reline is usually needed in the first few months, and replacement with a more permanent denture is usual after around six to twelve months. The NHS puts it as adjusting or replacing up to a year later.

Once your gums have settled, a conventional denture can be made. The Oral Health Foundation says dentures often need replacing every five to eight years, as your mouth continues to change.
Eating, speaking and sleeping in the first weeks
The first days call for patience. Stick with soft foods, cut things into small pieces and chew slowly. Introduce firmer foods gradually as your gums heal and the denture settles. Reading aloud and repeating tricky words can help your speech recover faster, and most people adapt over a few weeks. The NHS says it can take a few weeks to get used to dentures.
Sleeping with the denture in for the first night is normal, as advised above. After that, your dentist will guide you on when to take it out overnight to rest your gums. Keep it somewhere safe and clean, in water or a cleaning solution, and out of reach of pets.
Partial immediate dentures
Immediate dentures are not only for people losing all their teeth. If you are having a few teeth removed and have others remaining, a partial immediate denture can fill the gaps straight away. The NHS describes implants as being fixed to the jawbone to replace tooth roots, and they can support crowns or some types of dentures. The cost depends on whether you need a full or partial denture, the material and the number of teeth.
