There is no single answer. According to the Oral Health Foundation, crowns can last many years if they are well cared for, and your dentist can give you an idea of how long your crown is likely to last. How long yours lasts depends on the material, the tooth underneath, your gums, how you clean and how you bite.
Exact year ranges are quoted on many dental websites, but those figures are rarely tied to a named study.
According to the NHS, a crown is a type of cap that completely covers a real tooth, and it is fixed in your mouth. The Oral Health Foundation says a crown fits over the remaining part of a tooth, and it may be recommended if a tooth is badly damaged or broken, has a large filling and is weakened, has been root canal treated, is worn down or cracked, or is discoloured or uneven in shape.
The real picture is a range with no fixed upper or lower limit. The Oral Health Foundation says that well cared for crowns can last many years, without naming a number of years. Some websites give figures by material, but these are rarely tied to a source you can check.
The Oral Health Foundation describes the main options. Porcelain bonded to metal has a strong metal base covered with tooth coloured porcelain. All porcelain crowns are often used on front teeth, and the charity says they are not as strong as some other options.
A crown covers the tooth but does not replace it. The Oral Health Foundation says crowns are often used on teeth that are weakened, root canal treated, worn down or cracked, so the condition of the remaining tooth matters.

Signs that a crown needs attention include a crown that is loose or wobbling, a crown that is cracked or broken, and food getting stuck at the gum line. In addition, the NHS lists sensitive teeth, bleeding gums and swollen, red or sore gums as signs of wear or gum disease that should be looked at.

The care advice is the same as for natural teeth, with the aim of keeping the tooth and gum under the crown healthy.

See a dentist if a crown feels loose, cracked or uncomfortable, if gums around it bleed or look swollen, or if you are due a check up. A broken crown or a tooth with no crown over it should be seen quickly.

The tooth underneath still needs to be kept clean. The Oral Health Foundation advises brushing with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between teeth daily, and the NHS stresses regular check ups. Your dentist can look at the edge of the crown during an examination.
See a dentist promptly, because an exposed tooth is more at risk. A loose or wobbling crown and a cracked or broken crown are both reasons to be seen.

I have quite sensitive teeth near my gums and I can find the probing and investigation quite uncomfortable during a consultation, but this wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t experience discomfort and felt in very safe hands. This also applied to the hygienist work. I didn’t even have to ask Priscilla to avoid using the ultra sound cleaner on the sensitive areas of my teeth.
