Invisalign Cost: Beyond the Price Tag

Invisalign Cost: Beyond the Price Tag

July 19, 2026

Orthodontic treatment is an important investment in your oral health and appearance. Whether you're exploring traditional braces or modern clear aligners like Invisalign, many people wonder about the costs involved and whether their insurance will cover these treatments. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore NHS orthodontic cover, private orthodontic treatment costs, and how dental insurance can help you manage these expenses.

Orthodontic treatment costs can vary significantly depending on the type of treatment, the complexity of your case, and whether you receive NHS or private care. On the NHS, orthodontic treatment is available for children and young adults under 18 if they meet specific clinical criteria. For adults, NHS orthodontic treatment is generally limited, making private care the most common option.

Dental insurance for braces and other orthodontic treatments can help offset the cost of private care. However, it’s important to check the specifics of your policy, as coverage can vary greatly between different plans. Some policies may cover a percentage of the treatment cost, while others may offer a fixed benefit amount.

At Maida Smiles, we understand that the cost of orthodontic treatment can be a concern for many patients. That’s why we offer a range of payment options and work with various dental insurance providers to help make treatment more affordable. Our team is committed to helping you find the best way to finance your orthodontic care.

In this blog, we’ll explore the various aspects of orthodontic treatment costs and insurance, including how to navigate the NHS system, what to expect from private treatment costs, and how to maximise your dental insurance benefits.

NHS Orthodontic Treatment: What’s Covered and Who Qualifies?

NHS orthodontic treatment is available in the UK, but eligibility is determined by specific criteria. Understanding who qualifies and what’s covered can help you make informed decisions about your orthodontic care.

NHS orthodontic treatment is primarily available for children and young adults under the age of 18. Eligibility is determined by a standardised assessment system called the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). This system categorises the severity of orthodontic problems and determines whether NHS treatment is appropriate.

Patients with a high IOTN score, indicating significant orthodontic need, are typically eligible for NHS-funded treatment. This may include braces, retainers, and other orthodontic appliances. However, it’s important to note that NHS orthodontic treatment does not include cosmetic procedures, such as teeth whitening, and focuses solely on improving dental function and health.

For adults, NHS orthodontic treatment is generally limited to cases with severe clinical need, such as complex jaw problems or significant bite issues. In most cases, adults seeking orthodontic treatment for cosmetic reasons will need to pursue private care.

It’s also worth noting that NHS orthodontic treatment may have waiting lists, particularly in areas with high demand. If you require treatment urgently or prefer a specific type of treatment, private care may be a more suitable option.

At Maida Smiles, we can advise you on your eligibility for NHS orthodontic treatment and help you explore all available options. Our team is committed to ensuring you receive the most appropriate and effective care for your individual needs.

Private Orthodontic Treatment Costs: What to Expect

For those not eligible for NHS orthodontic treatment or those who prefer more advanced options, private orthodontic treatment offers a wider range of choices. However, it’s important to understand the associated costs to plan your finances effectively.

The cost of private orthodontic treatment can vary significantly depending on several factors, including the type of treatment, the complexity of your case, and the location of the dental practice. Here’s a general overview of what you might expect:

  • Traditional metal braces: £1,500 to £3,000
  • Ceramic braces: £2,000 to £4,000
  • Lingual braces: £3,000 to £10,000
  • Invisalign: £2,000 to £6,000

These costs are approximate and can vary based on individual circumstances. It’s important to discuss the specific costs of your treatment with your dentist or orthodontist before proceeding.

At Maida Smiles, we provide transparent pricing and detailed treatment plans to ensure you have a clear understanding of the costs involved. We also offer flexible payment options to help make treatment more accessible and manageable.

While private orthodontic treatment can be a significant financial commitment, it’s important to consider the long-term benefits. Improved dental health, enhanced appearance, and increased confidence can all contribute to a better quality of life.

Our team at Maida Smiles is committed to providing high-quality orthodontic care at competitive prices. We believe that everyone deserves a healthy, beautiful smile, and we work hard to make that possible for all our patients.

Dental Insurance for Orthodontics: Navigating Your Options

Navigating dental insurance for orthodontic treatment can be complex, but understanding your options can help you maximise your benefits and minimise out-of-pocket expenses. Here’s what you need to know about dental insurance for braces and other orthodontic treatments.

Firstly, it’s important to check whether your dental insurance plan includes orthodontic coverage. Not all dental insurance plans cover orthodontic treatment, and those that do may have specific conditions and limitations. Review your policy carefully or speak with your insurance provider to understand your coverage.

If your plan includes orthodontic coverage, you’ll need to understand the specifics of what’s covered. Some plans may cover a percentage of the treatment cost, while others offer a fixed benefit amount. Coverage may also differ for NHS versus private treatment.

It’s also important to consider waiting periods. Many dental insurance plans have a waiting period before orthodontic benefits kick in. This means you may need to have your policy in place for a certain period before you can claim for orthodontic treatment.

Another consideration is the annual or lifetime maximum benefit for orthodontic treatment. Many policies cap the amount they will pay out for orthodontic care, so it’s important to be aware of these limits when planning your treatment.

At Maida Smiles, we work with a range of dental insurance providers and can help you navigate your insurance options. Our team can assist you in understanding your coverage and maximising your benefits to make orthodontic treatment more affordable.

Payment Plans and Financing Options for Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment can be a significant financial commitment, but there are various payment plans and financing options available to help manage the costs. Understanding these options can make orthodontic care more accessible and affordable.

Many dental practices, including Maida Smiles, offer flexible payment plans that allow you to spread the cost of your treatment over a period of time. These plans can make it easier to budget for orthodontic care without a large upfront payment. Payment plans typically involve a deposit followed by monthly instalments, with little or no interest.

In addition to in-practice payment plans, there are also external financing options available. Companies specialising in healthcare finance, such as Medenta or Chrysalis Finance, offer loans specifically designed for dental and medical treatments. These loans often have competitive interest rates and flexible repayment terms.

Another option to consider is a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA), if available to you. These accounts allow you to set aside pre-tax money for healthcare expenses, including orthodontic treatment. Using these accounts can provide significant tax savings.

It’s also worth exploring whether your employer offers any dental benefits that could help offset the cost of orthodontic treatment. Some employers include dental coverage as part of their employee benefits package, which may include orthodontic treatment.

At Maida Smiles, our team is dedicated to helping you find the best way to finance your orthodontic treatment. We offer a range of payment options and can provide guidance on the most suitable financing solution for your individual needs and circumstances.

Maximising Your Orthodontic Insurance Benefits: Tips and Strategies

Making the most of your dental insurance benefits for orthodontic treatment requires careful planning and a thorough understanding of your policy. Here are some tips and strategies to help you maximise your orthodontic insurance benefits.

Review Your Policy Carefully: Before starting orthodontic treatment, review your dental insurance policy in detail. Understand what’s covered, any waiting periods, and the maximum benefit for orthodontic treatment.

Use In-Network Providers: If your insurance plan has a network of preferred providers, using an in-network dentist or orthodontist can help maximise your benefits. In-network providers have agreed to discounted rates with your insurance company, which can reduce your out-of-pocket costs.

Start Treatment Strategically: If you’re planning to start orthodontic treatment, consider timing it to maximise your insurance benefits. For example, if your plan has an annual maximum benefit, starting treatment at the beginning of the year can allow you to utilise your full benefit for that year.

Keep Detailed Records: Maintain thorough records of all your orthodontic treatments and insurance claims. This can help you track your benefits and resolve any disputes with your insurance provider more easily.

Communicate with Your Dentist: Work closely with your dentist or orthodontist and their administrative team to ensure all necessary documentation is submitted to your insurance provider. This can help prevent claim denials and ensure you receive the maximum benefit you’re entitled to.

Explore Supplemental Insurance: If your current dental insurance plan has limited orthodontic coverage, consider supplemental dental insurance or a dental discount plan to help offset the costs.

At Maida Smiles, we are committed to helping our patients navigate the complexities of dental insurance for orthodontic treatment. Our knowledgeable team can provide guidance and support to help you maximise your benefits and make orthodontic care more affordable.

I could not be more satisfied with my experience at Maida Smiles - A special mention to Dr Gurteurez who is one of the most friendly and professional dentists I have ever met

Adam

I had my first visit and the team was very warm, caring and professional. The online booking platform makes it very easy to arrange your appointment. Doctor Pedro made me feel comfortable despite this being my first appointment since Covid. He is incredibly knowledgeable and offers you the best treatment for your specific condition. I would highly recommend them

Gian Paolo Ziletti

Professional. Friendly. Informative. Maida Smiles offers great dental services including cleanings, oral surgery and realignment. I feel very lucky to have them so close by. I had an appointment just this week that was quick, thorough and safe.

Being very nervous about using dentists after a terrible experience when I was younger, I came to Maida Smiles and loved the calm patient demeanour of Pedro. You can clearly see Pedro and the team take pride in what they do and are perfectionists. The whole experience was great and I will never go to another dentist again.

Reena Nathwani

Delighted with the outcome of my treatment by Pedro. Meticulous attention to detail explaining exactly how the procedure would be carried out from first consultation to completion backed up with supporting guidance notes. Clearly an expert in his field and someone who cares passionately about the outcomes for his patients. Highly recommended.

I loved my first visit to Maida Smile Dental Clinic. The staff member at reception was very warm, welcoming and professional. My dentist, Priscilla, and her assistant were fantastic. I have quite sensitive teeth near my gums and I can find the probing and investigation quite uncomfortable during a consultation, but this wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t experience discomfort and felt in very safe hands. This also applied to the hygienist work. I didn’t even have to ask Priscilla to avoid using the ultra sound cleaner on the sensitive areas of my teeth. I’m looking forward to going back, and that’s not often you can say that about going to the dentist!

Since I first had the luck to be recommended and book an appointment with Dr. Pedro Gutierres over 8 years ago, I have never trusted my dental health nor my family’s to anyone else. It’s very hard to find a dentist who ticks all the boxes and even goes beyond any expectations you may have, from service, sympathy, professionalism, and expertise, etc., 5 stars are not enough to rate him. I was so happy when he opened his own clinic and surrounded himself with the best professionals you can find, I cannot recommend Maida Smiles Dental Clinic enough.

Dr. Pedro Gutierres is the best Implantologist I have come across. His work is amazing and of very high quality! I would highly recommend him and Maida Smiles to all my friends and family. If you want the perfect smile this is the place to go.

“Pedro was so patient and professional throughout my treatment for my implants.. I chose to have my treatment with a local anaesthetic rather than any sedation and have a very bad gag reflex when anything touches the back of my throat. His patience throughout the experience was wonderful, completely putting me at ease and he also gave me a technique to help me in the future. I have seen him for my follow up and fully intend to book an annual visit in 2020. which is no small thing as I live 60 miles away.I can thoroughly recommend him for any treatment.”

Denise Gilbert

I was very nervous to pull my ingrown wisdom tooth. Dr Pedro Guiterres made me feel really comfortable and the job was completed very professionally. It didn’t take long at all and I didn’t feel any pain. I would definitely recommend his service at this practice.

I was very nervous about having a dental implant but was immediately put at ease by Dr Pedro Gutierres. The procedure was explained in full and the care both during and after treatment has been of the highest standard. I received advice on how to look after my implant and have had no problems. I highly recommend.

Dawn Briggs

I had 7 implants installed by Dr Pedro Gutierres, including one which required a bone graft. In my 70 years I’ve had some bad experiences with dental treatment so it takes a lot for me to relax but, from my initial consultation, through to the end of the treatment, I had complete trust in Pedro’s expertise: preparations for the treatment and after-care were extremely thorough and fully explained, the treatment itself was surprisingly endurable (considering what was involved) and the implants have made a major difference to my life. If you are considering implants then I would whole-heartedly and sincerely recommend Pedro for this work.

Russ Hickman

I couldn’t recommend Maida Smiles enough: the care, attention to detail and the way Dentists and Nurses made sure I felt comfortable and safe throughout the treatments was incredible. Dr Pedro explained the treatments in detail to me and I have never felt under pressure to proceed… but I am very glad I did as I am happy and confident to smile again!

Mariana Pinheiro

Highly recommend this place to anybody looking for a friendly and trustworthy practice with an incredibly friendly and patient staff. Dr Pedro has been one of the best dentists I’ve ever had, he made me feel comfortable and were very knowledgeable in explaining every step of what he was doing and answering all of my questions. Amazing thorough the procedure, excellent communication, superb and professional treatment. I hope they keep it this way for a long time.

Joas Souza

Dr Pedro is a very good, confident and experienced professional. I’ve known him for some years now and always felt well cared for, either for small or bigger treatments. The facilities of the clinic are amazing and all the staff are very friendly. Highly recommended.”

Nelson Cafruni

I went to different clinics before, and nobody could really convince me until Maida Smiles did. The team here makes you comfortable , shows you different options and different budgets , and doesn't try to make you go only for one plan. I felt that the team was knowledgeable and wanted to help me , so that's why I decided to start

Diogo

I was referred to Dr. Pedro who did such a wonderful job with my teeth. The staff was extremely professional, they put you at ease, and it just made the whole experience easier. I've never looked back since

Theresa

"I told him, 'I want beautiful teeth, beautiful but natural, I don't want fake looking teeth.' Now I smile, I talk... it just makes you more confident. If you wear a beautiful nice suit... you have beautiful teeth, then it's like a perfect."

Louca

"I went to my hygienist a little while ago, and she said to me they were the best implants that she'd ever seen and she would never have known that they weren't my real teeth."

Sharon

Dr. Pedro explained the process of Invisalign to me. It sounded easy, it was quite a quick process, and the end result is my teeth moved back, so I'm quite happy.

Soula

I feel like I've not just developed a professional relationship with my dentist and the staff... they become more like friends as well, because of the kind of compassion and sympathy that they give you during treatment.

Alvin

"After a friend recommended the clinic, I was referred to Dr. Pedro, who did such a wonderful job with my teeth. The staff was extremely professional; they put you at ease, and it just made the whole experience easier. They have more than met my expectations. I have to have a few more implants, and I'm not afraid anymore. Now, finally, I can live again."

Lesley

"After not having a great experience with previous dental treatments, I was desperate for someone that I trusted. I broke a tooth, and even before I saw Dr. Pedro, he reassured me that I was going to be fine. He made me feel very comfortable and at ease. It was an amazing experience, from not only Dr. Pedro but also all the staff in the clinic, and I would definitely recommend [them] ".

Mariana

I chose Maida Smiles because of the reviews and a friend who was really happy with the results. The results definitely met my expectations. My expressions are much more smooth than before and it really makes the difference

Carolina

I’m very grateful for the quick and efficient service I received when I needed an emergency appointment. The staff were kind and accommodating, and the dentist provided clear, helpful advice that made a real difference. The whole experience was reassuring. Highly recommend their professionalism and expertise!

Safiya Guled

I am always anxious when having to see the dentist and this was one of my first experiences with Maida Smiles. The dentist, Benedict Harrison was very reassuring and immediately put me at ease. He was quite lucid in his explanations of what had to be done, etcetera, and is making good progress with the ongoing treatment. Also, the rest of the staff were friendly and just plain nice.

John Jacobs

Wow wow Dr Claudia is the best dentist in London, my kid adores her and it is always a pleasant visit. Can’t recommend her enough

Bel Cohn

I am delighted with the results of my replacement veneers.

Dr Benedict Harrison was very good at talking me through the whole process and keeping me informed during the treatment if there were any issues - which there weren’t.

He has a charming demeanour which is an added advantage in a dentist, who I think we all agree are not our favourite people, overall a 5 star experience.

Karen Shepherd

I went to the Maida Smiles Clinic for the first time and had the most wonderful experience! I am dentist phobic but strangely left the place with a big smile on my face (literally!). The receptionist was super kind, Susan was impeccable and very helpful, and I had my appointment with the most amazing dentist Dr Mafalda Vilhena. Couldn’t recommend her enough. She explains the whole procedure and is very rigorous in her work. Congratulations to Dr Pedro Gutierres for creating such an excellent working environment and to all the team. I will be back and bringing my family along and we don’t even live in Maida Vale. Thank you for such an impeccable job on my teeth and for taking my fear of dentists away. Note: they don’t cover NHS, only private bookings or with insurance.
