The difference between Invisalign and veneers is what each one changes. Invisalign moves your own teeth into a new position using a series of clear, removable aligners. Veneers do not move teeth at all. They are thin shells bonded to the front of teeth to change their shape, size, colour or surface.
So the choice is rarely about which is better. It is about what bothers you about your smile. If the main issue is crowding, gaps or the way teeth sit, straightening is usually the starting point. If the teeth are in a good position but chipped, worn, stained or uneven in shape, veneers may be worth discussing. A dentist has to examine your teeth and gums before either can be recommended, and the two are sometimes combined.
According to Align Technology, the company that makes it, Invisalign is a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually straighten your teeth, with no brackets or wires. Align says the aligners are worn for 22 hours a day, and that your dentist designs a personalised plan and can show a simulation of your future smile. For a balanced view, see Invisalign pros and cons.
In practice, a dentist scans your teeth, plans the movements, and you move through sets of aligners, each one a small step from the last. Tooth coloured attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the aligners grip, and small amounts of enamel may be smoothed between teeth to create space where it is needed. You have reviews along the way. We run Invisalign treatment with Lite and Full options.
According to the Oral Health Foundation, a veneer is a thin covering that is fixed to the front surface of a tooth, and a small amount of enamel is removed from the front of the tooth to make room for it. It describes porcelain and tooth coloured composite as the materials, and says good daily cleaning and regular dental check ups will help veneers last longer.
Veneers can be used for chips, wear, staining, gaps and teeth that are small or uneven in shape. Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory and bonded on. Composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth by the dentist. You can read more about the options under teeth veneers.
The table below is a general guide. Your own dentist will tell you how it applies to your mouth.
| Factor | Invisalign | Veneers |
|---|---|---|
| What it changes | The position of your teeth: crowding, gaps and bite | The look of the tooth: shape, size, colour, chips and wear |
| How it works | Custom clear aligners, changed in stages, move your own teeth | Thin shells of porcelain or composite are bonded to the front of teeth |
| Tooth preparation | Teeth are not cut down to move them, though small adjustments between teeth and attachments may be used | Usually a small amount of enamel is removed, which cannot be undone. Composite can sometimes need little or none, and the dentist advises on this |
| Time frame | Treatment happens in stages with reviews, and the dentist sets the length of your plan after scanning your teeth | Fewer appointments, and composite veneers are built up directly on the tooth in one visit where suitable. Porcelain involves a laboratory, so it takes more than one visit |
| Cost approach | Fixed fee by option, from £2,475 for one arch, quoted by the dentist after assessment | Priced per tooth, from £750 for composite, so the total depends on how many teeth are treated |
| Upkeep | Retainers after treatment to hold the new position, plus normal cleaning | Good cleaning, regular check ups, and replacement in time, as veneers are not a one off for life |
| Who it suits | People with crowding, gaps or teeth that sit out of line, and healthy gums | People whose teeth sit well but look worn, chipped, stained, uneven or small |
These are movement problems, and aligners are designed to solve them by moving the teeth themselves. Veneers can make crooked front teeth look more even in some cases, but they do it by changing the tooth, not its position, which means removing enamel. Many dentists prefer to straighten first where the teeth allow it, so that as little tooth as possible has to be changed. Our post on how veneers can help crooked teeth explains what they can and cannot do.
These are surface and shape problems. Aligners will not change the colour or shape of a tooth, and they will not repair a chip. Veneers, or sometimes composite bonding, can rebuild the edge or reshape the tooth. Bonding is a lighter option that adds tooth coloured material to the existing tooth, and it can be a good starting question to ask at a consultation.
If your teeth do not meet well, that is a bite issue. Straightening can sometimes improve it, whereas veneers do not move teeth and can add to the load on a bite that is already uneven. This is one of the reasons a full examination matters before any cosmetic work.
Invisalign. After a scan, you receive aligners to change in sequence. You wear them for most of the day and take them out to eat and clean your teeth. The NHS explains that after braces you need to wear a retainer, a device that stops your teeth moving back to their original position, and the orthodontist tells you how long. The same principle applies after aligners. Retainers come in different types, including Vivera retainers.
Veneers. The dentist checks your teeth and gums, discusses shade and shape, prepares the teeth where needed, and bonds the veneers. Porcelain veneers are made to order, so there is a stage between preparing the teeth and fitting the final veneers. Composite veneers are shaped on the tooth at the chair. After the veneers are fitted there is a review.
Both treatments depend on healthy teeth and gums. Decay and gum disease need to be dealt with first, whichever route you choose.
We publish our fees online, and the dentist gives you the figure for your case after an assessment. The Invisalign fees on our fee list are Invisalign Lite at £2,475 for one arch or £4,950 for both, and Invisalign Full at £5,500 for both arches. The price depends on how complex the case is, and our Invisalign prices show what the fee includes, which is the appointments, the aligners and retainers.
Veneers are priced per tooth. The veneer costs page lists composite veneers from £750 per tooth, e.max veneers from £975 per tooth and porcelain veneers from £1,250 per tooth. The total depends on how many teeth are treated and which material is chosen, and you can see the veneer costs in full.
Because aligners are priced as a course and veneers per tooth, comparing the two directly can mislead. Treating two chipped front teeth with veneers costs far less than treating a whole smile, and straightening a mild case costs less than a complex one. Ask for a written plan that sets out each option side by side.
We offer 0% finance over 12 months on eligible treatment, subject to status, and we are a credit broker, not a lender. Longer terms may carry interest. The details are under dental finance.
After Invisalign, the teeth need to be held in place. Without a retainer they can drift back, which is why dentists stress wearing it as instructed. Our Invisalign prices page lists retainers among what the fee includes. Keep the aligners and retainers clean, and keep up your normal brushing and cleaning between the teeth.
After veneers, the Oral Health Foundation advises good daily cleaning and regular dental check ups. Composite is more likely than porcelain to stain or chip, though a chipped composite veneer can often be repaired. Veneers may need replacing in time, so it is sensible to think of them as a long term commitment rather than a one off. Grinding your teeth at night can damage veneers, so tell your dentist if you grind.
It is common for someone to need both: the teeth sit out of line and also look worn, small or uneven. In that case the usual order is to move the teeth first. Once they are in a good position, the dentist can see exactly what shape and size is needed, and may be able to use composite bonding or veneers on fewer teeth, or remove less enamel.
Combined plans often look like this:
Whether this suits you is for the dentist to decide after an examination, scan and discussion. Sequencing matters, because changing the order can affect the result.
Start with what you would change if you could change one thing. Then ask the following at a consultation.
A treatment coordinator can walk you through the options and the costs. Our fee list shows that an Invisalign consultation is free, and the dentist assesses your teeth and gums as part of the plan.
If you would like advice on straightening, reshaping or both, you can book a consultation at our Maida Vale clinic, and we will go through what is realistic for your teeth with no obligation.
Veneers can make teeth look more even, but they do not move teeth. They change the front surface and shape, and that usually involves removing some enamel. If the main issue is crowding or the way the teeth sit, straightening is usually discussed first.
Neither is better in general, because they do different jobs. Invisalign moves teeth, and veneers reshape or recolour them. Which suits you depends on what you want to change and on the state of your teeth and gums.
Veneers usually involve removing a small amount of enamel, and the Oral Health Foundation says this is done to make room for the veneer. That cannot be undone, so it is a decision to take carefully. Your dentist should explain how much will be removed before you agree.
Yes, many people have both, usually with aligners first. Once the teeth are in position, the dentist can decide whether bonding or veneers are still needed, and on how many teeth. A dentist has to assess you to say if this suits you.
Veneers generally involve fewer appointments, and composite veneers can sometimes be completed in one visit. Invisalign happens in stages with reviews, and the dentist sets the length of the plan after scanning your teeth. Every case differs.
Aligners are priced as a course of treatment, and veneers per tooth, so the answer depends on the case. Our fee pages show Invisalign Lite from £2,475 for one arch and veneers from £750 per tooth for composite. A written plan shows the total for your own case.
Yes. The NHS explains that a retainer stops your teeth moving back to their original position after treatment, and the dentist tells you how long to wear it. Without one, teeth can drift back.
Gum disease and decay normally need treatment first, whichever option you choose. Healthy gums and teeth give any treatment a better foundation. Your dentist will check this at your first examination.

Being very nervous about using dentists after a terrible experience when I was younger, I came to Maida Smiles and loved the calm patient demeanour of Pedro. You can clearly see Pedro and the team take pride in what they do and are perfectionists. The whole experience was great and I will never go to another dentist again.

Delighted with the outcome of my treatment by Pedro. Meticulous attention to detail explaining exactly how the procedure would be carried out from first consultation to completion backed up with supporting guidance notes. Clearly an expert in his field and someone who cares passionately about the outcomes for his patients. Highly recommended.

I loved my first visit to Maida Smile Dental Clinic. The staff member at reception was very warm, welcoming and professional. My dentist, Priscilla, and her assistant were fantastic. I have quite sensitive teeth near my gums and I can find the probing and investigation quite uncomfortable during a consultation, but this wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t experience discomfort and felt in very safe hands. This also applied to the hygienist work. I didn’t even have to ask Priscilla to avoid using the ultra sound cleaner on the sensitive areas of my teeth. I’m looking forward to going back, and that’s not often you can say that about going to the dentist!

Since I first had the luck to be recommended and book an appointment with Dr. Pedro Gutierres over 8 years ago, I have never trusted my dental health nor my family’s to anyone else. It’s very hard to find a dentist who ticks all the boxes and even goes beyond any expectations you may have, from service, sympathy, professionalism, and expertise, etc., 5 stars are not enough to rate him. I was so happy when he opened his own clinic and surrounded himself with the best professionals you can find, I cannot recommend Maida Smiles Dental Clinic enough.

“Pedro was so patient and professional throughout my treatment for my implants.. I chose to have my treatment with a local anaesthetic rather than any sedation and have a very bad gag reflex when anything touches the back of my throat. His patience throughout the experience was wonderful, completely putting me at ease and he also gave me a technique to help me in the future. I have seen him for my follow up and fully intend to book an annual visit in 2020. which is no small thing as I live 60 miles away.I can thoroughly recommend him for any treatment.”
Denise Gilbert

I was very nervous about having a dental implant but was immediately put at ease by Dr Pedro Gutierres. The procedure was explained in full and the care both during and after treatment has been of the highest standard. I received advice on how to look after my implant and have had no problems. I highly recommend.

I had 7 implants installed by Dr Pedro Gutierres, including one which required a bone graft. In my 70 years I’ve had some bad experiences with dental treatment so it takes a lot for me to relax but, from my initial consultation, through to the end of the treatment, I had complete trust in Pedro’s expertise: preparations for the treatment and after-care were extremely thorough and fully explained, the treatment itself was surprisingly endurable (considering what was involved) and the implants have made a major difference to my life. If you are considering implants then I would whole-heartedly and sincerely recommend Pedro for this work.

I couldn’t recommend Maida Smiles enough: the care, attention to detail and the way Dentists and Nurses made sure I felt comfortable and safe throughout the treatments was incredible. Dr Pedro explained the treatments in detail to me and I have never felt under pressure to proceed… but I am very glad I did as I am happy and confident to smile again!

I went to different clinics before, and nobody could really convince me until Maida Smiles did. The team here makes you comfortable , shows you different options and different budgets , and doesn't try to make you go only for one plan. I felt that the team was knowledgeable and wanted to help me , so that's why I decided to start

Dr. Pedro explained the process of Invisalign to me. It sounded easy, it was quite a quick process, and the end result is my teeth moved back, so I'm quite happy.
Soula
I feel like I've not just developed a professional relationship with my dentist and the staff... they become more like friends as well, because of the kind of compassion and sympathy that they give you during treatment.

"After a friend recommended the clinic, I was referred to Dr. Pedro, who did such a wonderful job with my teeth. The staff was extremely professional; they put you at ease, and it just made the whole experience easier. They have more than met my expectations. I have to have a few more implants, and I'm not afraid anymore. Now, finally, I can live again."

"After not having a great experience with previous dental treatments, I was desperate for someone that I trusted. I broke a tooth, and even before I saw Dr. Pedro, he reassured me that I was going to be fine. He made me feel very comfortable and at ease. It was an amazing experience, from not only Dr. Pedro but also all the staff in the clinic, and I would definitely recommend [them] ".

I am always anxious when having to see the dentist and this was one of my first experiences with Maida Smiles. The dentist, Benedict Harrison was very reassuring and immediately put me at ease. He was quite lucid in his explanations of what had to be done, etcetera, and is making good progress with the ongoing treatment. Also, the rest of the staff were friendly and just plain nice.

Wow wow Dr Claudia is the best dentist in London, my kid adores her and it is always a pleasant visit. Can’t recommend her enough
Bel Cohn
I am delighted with the results of my replacement veneers.
Dr Benedict Harrison was very good at talking me through the whole process and keeping me informed during the treatment if there were any issues - which there weren’t.
He has a charming demeanour which is an added advantage in a dentist, who I think we all agree are not our favourite people, overall a 5 star experience.
Karen Shepherd
I went to the Maida Smiles Clinic for the first time and had the most wonderful experience! I am dentist phobic but strangely left the place with a big smile on my face (literally!). The receptionist was super kind, Susan was impeccable and very helpful, and I had my appointment with the most amazing dentist Dr Mafalda Vilhena. Couldn’t recommend her enough. She explains the whole procedure and is very rigorous in her work. Congratulations to Dr Pedro Gutierres for creating such an excellent working environment and to all the team. I will be back and bringing my family along and we don’t even live in Maida Vale. Thank you for such an impeccable job on my teeth and for taking my fear of dentists away. Note: they don’t cover NHS, only private bookings or with insurance.
