The main difference between a private and an NHS dentist in London is how the fee is set and what it covers. NHS dentistry in England charges a fixed amount for each course of treatment, and covers care that is clinically necessary. Private dentists set their own fees, and can offer a wider choice of treatments, materials and appointment times.
Neither option is automatically better. Which one is right for you depends on what you need, how soon you need it, and what you want from your appointment. This guide sets out the facts, so you can decide for yourself.
In England, you pay one charge for each course of NHS treatment, whatever the number of visits. The charge depends on the band your treatment falls into, and the NHS publishes the current amounts on nhs.uk. We do not quote them here, because they change. Charges in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland differ, so this article describes England only.
| NHS band | What it covers | How it is charged |
|---|---|---|
| Band 1 | Examination, advice, X rays if needed, preventive care such as fluoride, and simple gum care including scaling | One fixed charge per course |
| Band 2 | Everything in Band 1, plus fillings, root canal treatment, extractions and more extensive gum treatment | One fixed charge per course |
| Band 3 | Everything in Band 2, plus crowns, inlays and onlays, dentures, bridges and orthodontics | One fixed charge per course |
If your treatment includes items from more than one band, you pay for the highest band only. If you need more treatment within two months in the same or a lower band, there is no extra charge. Some people do not pay at all: for example, anyone who is pregnant or has had a baby in the past year, and children under 18, as well as those who receive certain benefits. [CONFIRM: check the current exemption list on nhs.uk before publishing]
One point catches people out. If a dentist thinks scaling is not clinically necessary, it must be paid for privately, and some treatments, such as non metal crowns, may be offered on a private basis. Always ask what you are being charged for.
Private dentistry has no national price list. Each practice sets its own fees, which is why a crown in one clinic can cost very different amounts from another. This makes it important to compare like with like. A useful quote should say what is included, such as the examination, any images, laboratory costs, a temporary crown and follow up appointments.
Here is how some of our own private fees compare with the NHS band for the closest treatment. Check nhs.uk for the current NHS charge. Please note that the comparison is not exact, because the NHS band covers a treatment that is clinically necessary and the materials, appointment lengths and choice may differ.
| Treatment | NHS England | Maida Smiles private fee |
|---|---|---|
| Examination | Band 1, fixed charge | New patient examination £110, existing patient £95 |
| Scale and polish | Included in Band 1 where clinically necessary | £115 (£125 with a dentist) |
| Extraction | Band 2, fixed charge | From £300 (regular), from £495 (surgical) |
| Crown | Band 3, fixed charge | Porcelain from £950, e.max or zirconia from £1,250 |
A £50 refundable deposit is taken when you book and returned when you attend. Our full list of private dental fees is online. [CONFIRM: that fees are current]
Some details matter when you are budgeting. Treatment is charged per course, not per visit, so a complicated treatment plan involving several appointments still attracts a single charge, as long as it falls within the same course. Replacing a lost or damaged denture or appliance can carry its own charge under NHS rules, and the NHS website explains when. You should also be told what you are being charged for before treatment starts.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland each run their own charging systems. If you live in London, the English rules apply, and that is what this article covers.
If you are in pain, have a swelling, or have broken or lost a tooth, you need advice quickly. You can contact a dentist, or call NHS 111 for advice. NHS urgent treatment has its own charge, listed on nhs.uk. Private practices set their own emergency fees. At Maida Smiles, an emergency appointment, which includes a prescription and periapical X rays, is £99. [CONFIRM: that the £99 fee is current]
Because there is no standard price list, it pays to ask the same questions of every practice you consider.
If a price looks surprisingly low, check what has been left out. If it looks high, ask what is behind it. A good practice will be glad to explain.
A routine check up and clean. Either route works well, if you can get an appointment. The NHS covers an examination and simple scaling in Band 1 where clinically necessary.
A filling or extraction. Both are available on the NHS under Band 2 when clinically necessary. A private route may offer more choice of materials and quicker appointments.
A crown, bridge or denture. NHS Band 3 covers these when clinically necessary. A private route offers more choice of materials, such as non metal crowns.
Cosmetic treatment. Whitening, veneers, composite bonding and similar treatments are generally private. An examination is a good starting point if you want to discuss what is possible.
Practices commonly point to the costs of running a clinic in London, including rent, staffing, equipment and laboratory fees. Appointment length is another factor, as private appointments are often longer. There is also a choice element: private care lets you choose materials, technology and cosmetic options that the NHS does not fund.
It is fair to say these explanations come from practices themselves rather than from official data. If a price looks high, ask what is behind it. A good dentist will explain without hesitation.
Price transparency matters in any private market. That is why we publish our fees online rather than asking you to call for a quote, and why we would like every patient to see an itemised written plan before treatment begins.
Finding an NHS dentist can be hard, and many people tell us they struggled to get an appointment. Availability varies a great deal from one borough to the next, and it changes over time, so check with practices near you rather than relying on a general figure.
The NHS says you can contact any NHS dental practice to ask about appointments, use its Find an NHS dentist tool, or contact your local integrated care board. You may be placed on a waiting list. Some practices offer both NHS and private appointments, and the NHS advises asking specifically for an NHS appointment when you book.
You do not have to choose one system for life. You can see an NHS dentist for routine care and a private dentist for something the NHS does not offer. Just be clear about which you are booking.
None of this means NHS care is poor. NHS dentists deliver high quality treatment that is clinically necessary. The difference is mostly in the scope, choice and convenience.
All dentists in the UK, whether NHS or private, must be registered with the General Dental Council. Dental practices in England are registered with the Care Quality Commission. The practice is registered with the Care Quality Commission and its clinicians with the General Dental Council, as shown in our website footer. If you ever need to raise a concern, a practice's complaints procedure is the first step.
Private dental treatment can be expensive, but there are ways to spread the cost. Treatment over £250 at Maida Smiles can be paid for over 12 months at 0% finance, and longer terms may carry interest. The options are explained in more detail under dental finance. Many private health insurers are accepted, so check your policy, and see our details on health insurance.
Ask yourself a few honest questions.
If you are unsure how often you should be seen, our check ups in Maida Vale are a good start, and your dentist will advise how often you need to come back. If you are looking at private options across the city, you can also see what we offer as a dentist in London.
| If this describes you | It may point towards |
|---|---|
| You want a routine check up and can get an NHS appointment nearby | NHS, with the charge set by band |
| You cannot find an NHS practice taking patients, or you need to be seen soon | Private, or an urgent NHS appointment if you are in pain |
| You want cosmetic treatment such as whitening or veneers | Private |
| You want a choice of materials for a crown, bridge or denture | Private, or NHS for the standard options |
| You want evening or Saturday appointments | Private practices more often offer this, but ask each practice |
None of these is a rule. They are starting points for the conversation with whichever dentist you choose.
Your first visit starts with a full examination, which is £110 for new patients. We look at your teeth, gums, bite and any concerns, take images if they are needed, and talk through what we find. You leave with a written plan that sets out the options, the likely costs and a sensible order of treatment. There is no obligation to go ahead.
To reserve your appointment, a £50 refundable deposit is taken at booking and returned when you attend. [CONFIRM: that the examination fee and deposit are as stated]
We are a private practice at 207 to 209 Sutherland Avenue, London W9 1RU, two minutes from Maida Vale tube station. A new patient dental examination is £110 and gives you a full assessment and a written plan with costs. You can find out more about the practice in our section on dentists in Maida Vale.
Not necessarily. Both are regulated and trained to the same standards. The difference is in the choice of treatments, appointment times and how fees are set.
It depends on the treatment and the practice. For example, an NHS crown falls under the highest NHS band at a fixed charge shown on nhs.uk, while our private crowns start from £950. We would encourage you to ask for itemised quotes and compare what is included.
Yes. Many people do. Make sure you ask for the right type of appointment, as some practices offer both.
You contact a practice and ask whether it is accepting NHS patients. You may be placed on a waiting list. The NHS recommends using its Find an NHS dentist service.
Cosmetic treatments are generally not available on the NHS, and some materials and options may be offered privately. Ask your dentist what is covered.
Examples include children under 18, people who are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months, and those receiving certain benefits. Check nhs.uk for the full list.
Some policies contribute to dental costs, and Maida Smiles accepts many insurers. Check your cover and contact us for advice.

I could not be more satisfied with my experience at Maida Smiles - A special mention to Dr Gurteurez who is one of the most friendly and professional dentists I have ever met
Adam
I had my first visit and the team was very warm, caring and professional. The online booking platform makes it very easy to arrange your appointment. Doctor Pedro made me feel comfortable despite this being my first appointment since Covid. He is incredibly knowledgeable and offers you the best treatment for your specific condition. I would highly recommend them
Gian Paolo Ziletti
Professional. Friendly. Informative. Maida Smiles offers great dental services including cleanings, oral surgery and realignment. I feel very lucky to have them so close by. I had an appointment just this week that was quick, thorough and safe.

Being very nervous about using dentists after a terrible experience when I was younger, I came to Maida Smiles and loved the calm patient demeanour of Pedro. You can clearly see Pedro and the team take pride in what they do and are perfectionists. The whole experience was great and I will never go to another dentist again.
Reena Nathwani
Delighted with the outcome of my treatment by Pedro. Meticulous attention to detail explaining exactly how the procedure would be carried out from first consultation to completion backed up with supporting guidance notes. Clearly an expert in his field and someone who cares passionately about the outcomes for his patients. Highly recommended.

I loved my first visit to Maida Smile Dental Clinic. The staff member at reception was very warm, welcoming and professional. My dentist, Priscilla, and her assistant were fantastic. I have quite sensitive teeth near my gums and I can find the probing and investigation quite uncomfortable during a consultation, but this wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t experience discomfort and felt in very safe hands. This also applied to the hygienist work. I didn’t even have to ask Priscilla to avoid using the ultra sound cleaner on the sensitive areas of my teeth. I’m looking forward to going back, and that’s not often you can say that about going to the dentist!

Since I first had the luck to be recommended and book an appointment with Dr. Pedro Gutierres over 8 years ago, I have never trusted my dental health nor my family’s to anyone else. It’s very hard to find a dentist who ticks all the boxes and even goes beyond any expectations you may have, from service, sympathy, professionalism, and expertise, etc., 5 stars are not enough to rate him. I was so happy when he opened his own clinic and surrounded himself with the best professionals you can find, I cannot recommend Maida Smiles Dental Clinic enough.

Dr. Pedro Gutierres is the best Implantologist I have come across. His work is amazing and of very high quality! I would highly recommend him and Maida Smiles to all my friends and family. If you want the perfect smile this is the place to go.

“Pedro was so patient and professional throughout my treatment for my implants.. I chose to have my treatment with a local anaesthetic rather than any sedation and have a very bad gag reflex when anything touches the back of my throat. His patience throughout the experience was wonderful, completely putting me at ease and he also gave me a technique to help me in the future. I have seen him for my follow up and fully intend to book an annual visit in 2020. which is no small thing as I live 60 miles away.I can thoroughly recommend him for any treatment.”
Denise Gilbert
I was very nervous to pull my ingrown wisdom tooth. Dr Pedro Guiterres made me feel really comfortable and the job was completed very professionally. It didn’t take long at all and I didn’t feel any pain. I would definitely recommend his service at this practice.

I was very nervous about having a dental implant but was immediately put at ease by Dr Pedro Gutierres. The procedure was explained in full and the care both during and after treatment has been of the highest standard. I received advice on how to look after my implant and have had no problems. I highly recommend.
Dawn Briggs
I had 7 implants installed by Dr Pedro Gutierres, including one which required a bone graft. In my 70 years I’ve had some bad experiences with dental treatment so it takes a lot for me to relax but, from my initial consultation, through to the end of the treatment, I had complete trust in Pedro’s expertise: preparations for the treatment and after-care were extremely thorough and fully explained, the treatment itself was surprisingly endurable (considering what was involved) and the implants have made a major difference to my life. If you are considering implants then I would whole-heartedly and sincerely recommend Pedro for this work.
Russ Hickman
I couldn’t recommend Maida Smiles enough: the care, attention to detail and the way Dentists and Nurses made sure I felt comfortable and safe throughout the treatments was incredible. Dr Pedro explained the treatments in detail to me and I have never felt under pressure to proceed… but I am very glad I did as I am happy and confident to smile again!
Mariana Pinheiro
Highly recommend this place to anybody looking for a friendly and trustworthy practice with an incredibly friendly and patient staff. Dr Pedro has been one of the best dentists I’ve ever had, he made me feel comfortable and were very knowledgeable in explaining every step of what he was doing and answering all of my questions. Amazing thorough the procedure, excellent communication, superb and professional treatment. I hope they keep it this way for a long time.

Dr Pedro is a very good, confident and experienced professional. I’ve known him for some years now and always felt well cared for, either for small or bigger treatments. The facilities of the clinic are amazing and all the staff are very friendly. Highly recommended.”
Nelson Cafruni
I went to different clinics before, and nobody could really convince me until Maida Smiles did. The team here makes you comfortable , shows you different options and different budgets , and doesn't try to make you go only for one plan. I felt that the team was knowledgeable and wanted to help me , so that's why I decided to start
Diogo
I was referred to Dr. Pedro who did such a wonderful job with my teeth. The staff was extremely professional, they put you at ease, and it just made the whole experience easier. I've never looked back since
Theresa
"I told him, 'I want beautiful teeth, beautiful but natural, I don't want fake looking teeth.' Now I smile, I talk... it just makes you more confident. If you wear a beautiful nice suit... you have beautiful teeth, then it's like a perfect."
Louca
"I went to my hygienist a little while ago, and she said to me they were the best implants that she'd ever seen and she would never have known that they weren't my real teeth."
Sharon
Dr. Pedro explained the process of Invisalign to me. It sounded easy, it was quite a quick process, and the end result is my teeth moved back, so I'm quite happy.
Soula
I feel like I've not just developed a professional relationship with my dentist and the staff... they become more like friends as well, because of the kind of compassion and sympathy that they give you during treatment.
Alvin
"After a friend recommended the clinic, I was referred to Dr. Pedro, who did such a wonderful job with my teeth. The staff was extremely professional; they put you at ease, and it just made the whole experience easier. They have more than met my expectations. I have to have a few more implants, and I'm not afraid anymore. Now, finally, I can live again."
Lesley
"After not having a great experience with previous dental treatments, I was desperate for someone that I trusted. I broke a tooth, and even before I saw Dr. Pedro, he reassured me that I was going to be fine. He made me feel very comfortable and at ease. It was an amazing experience, from not only Dr. Pedro but also all the staff in the clinic, and I would definitely recommend [them] ".
Mariana
I chose Maida Smiles because of the reviews and a friend who was really happy with the results. The results definitely met my expectations. My expressions are much more smooth than before and it really makes the difference

I am always anxious when having to see the dentist and this was one of my first experiences with Maida Smiles. The dentist, Benedict Harrison was very reassuring and immediately put me at ease. He was quite lucid in his explanations of what had to be done, etcetera, and is making good progress with the ongoing treatment. Also, the rest of the staff were friendly and just plain nice.
John Jacobs
Wow wow Dr Claudia is the best dentist in London, my kid adores her and it is always a pleasant visit. Can’t recommend her enough
Bel Cohn
I am delighted with the results of my replacement veneers.
Dr Benedict Harrison was very good at talking me through the whole process and keeping me informed during the treatment if there were any issues - which there weren’t.
He has a charming demeanour which is an added advantage in a dentist, who I think we all agree are not our favourite people, overall a 5 star experience.
Karen Shepherd
I went to the Maida Smiles Clinic for the first time and had the most wonderful experience! I am dentist phobic but strangely left the place with a big smile on my face (literally!). The receptionist was super kind, Susan was impeccable and very helpful, and I had my appointment with the most amazing dentist Dr Mafalda Vilhena. Couldn’t recommend her enough. She explains the whole procedure and is very rigorous in her work. Congratulations to Dr Pedro Gutierres for creating such an excellent working environment and to all the team. I will be back and bringing my family along and we don’t even live in Maida Vale. Thank you for such an impeccable job on my teeth and for taking my fear of dentists away. Note: they don’t cover NHS, only private bookings or with insurance.
