Failed Root Canals

What No One Else Is Telling You

A whopping 150,000-200,000 UK residents visit Turkey annually for cosmetic dental procedures—a figure we find quite alarming, especially as Turkey is the third most popular destination globally for dental tourism. Hungary and Poland take the first two spots. While dental tourism to spots like Hungary and Turkey offers more cost-effective approaches to major treatments, there’s a reason why hundreds of dentists in the UK are crying out for it to stop – and it’s nothing to do with money.

Speaking honestly, the combination of cheap dental treatments and the lure of quick fixes is appealing to anybody. Patients think combining a week in Turkey with treatment will mean they can return home with a new smile and tan. But in cases, we’ve resolved for Turkey teeth gone wrong, we’ve only met patients who have returned home in pain, facing years of corrective work ahead of them, making the cost of their smile even more than just visiting a practice in the UK initially.

Maida Smiles clinic will help treat Turkey Teeth

Only a handful of dentists like ourselves are willing to examine your old work and see what we can do to help. This often results in removing it and replacing it with much more trusted and regulated systems backed by decades of clinical research.

Many patients who have relied on the NHS for years also think they’ll be able to step in, but they won’t help you repair damage caused by receiving botched cosmetic dental treatment abroad.

Maida Smiles is a cosmetic clinic in London that can help restore the aesthetics and function of your smile. We even offer emergency appointments for lost crowns, veneers, teeth, abscesses, toothaches, and failed dental implant treatments because we understand they need to be seen immediately. For patients worried about cost, we offer 0% finance.

The real problem with Turkey Teeth

The brand matters

With dentistry, there is no quick fix, and no treatment is instant. It all takes time—and for good reason.

Procedures are too fast

When dealing with the cosmetics of your smile, we’re trying to achieve perfection, so rushed work is never a good sign. Plus, many treatments patients go abroad for are not one-stage procedures.

They’re often completed over several appointments and weeks, so making this treatment faster only increases the risk of damage and improper healing.

When planning for your dental treatment, we always consider the time it takes for your mouth to heal. For example, we need the jaw to fuse fully with the implant before it can bear any weight and be used to chew.

Rushing this stage means your dental implant can fail. You cannot achieve it in a few days, as their clinics suggest.

Patients receiving the wrong treatment

Turkish dental clinics can provide ethical and appropriate treatments. However, videos and images of the procedures evidently show that inappropriate and unnecessarily invasive treatments with lifelong, irreversible changes have been provided to the patient instead.

Receiving crowns instead of veneers

  • Dental crowns are not the appropriate cosmetic procedure
  • Aggressive tooth reduction to each tooth means you lose perfectly healthy structure for no reason at all
  • Patients given no information, comparison or alternative treatment options
  • Treatments are given without consent

Patients booking treatment abroad believe they’ll receive veneers, for example, but they’re receiving dental crowns instead, a very different treatment, causing dire consequences. The tooth needs to be shaved down considerably to place a dental crown.

However, veneers remove a small amount of enamel (up to 0.5mm), whereas a dental crown removes three-quarters of your tooth, leaving only 2mm.

Using some brands of veneers, we don’t have to remove any tooth enamel at all, making it entirely a non-invasive procedure.

Dental crowns are irreversible. You will always require crowns, which will need replacing at some point. You won’t be able to replace crowns with veneers.

Complications are not easy to treat

If patients experience any type of complication, it’s not easy to go back abroad to deal with it, especially as these situations are emergencies with patients in pain. So bear in mind that even though some of these practices might offer lifetime guarantees, it might not be so easy for you to go over and get the problem treated. For example, we’ve treated patients with metal grates hanging out their mouth, making it near impossible for them to fly back and correct their work.

Complications that arise from Turkey Teeth

  • - Patients unable to eat, chew or speak
  • - Sensitive teeth, tooth pain and throbbing gums
  • - Infected gums and dental abscesses
  • - Prosthetics like veneers, crowns or implants falling out
  • - Permanent tooth loss
  • Receiving different brands than expected

It’s come to our attention recently that certain websites online for clinics abroad are being slightly misleading.

Some sections of their page will feature dental implant brands patients might have heard of or are familiar with from UK dentists.

For example, we’ve seen these websites talk and mention the brand Nobel Biocare, which is the best for full mouth implants for many reasons, which can mislead patients into thinking they offer it.

However, when you look at their price packages, a different, cheaper, less studied brand of implant is being offered instead. See legitimate brands.

    Turkish dentistry is not regulated

When things go wrong with Turkey Teeth, there’s little to nothing you can do and no professional body you can go and complain to. Turkey does not have a regulatory body like the British Dental Association, which ensures high standards and ethical practices. Plus, with no regulatory bodies, practices in Turkey can market themselves as experts (in treatments you cannot specialise in), with some members of their team not even having a dental degree, something dentists in the UK can get in a lot of trouble over.

And to make things worse, many dentists in the UK might refuse to help you due to botched work. Different brands, techniques and systems are used, which we don’t use in the UK, putting the dentist at risk and leaving you without help.

What you see on social media is endorsed

You can’t go online without being bombarded with social feeds full of Turkish teeth and dental treatments abroad. For some patients, the prospect of a nice holiday, a new tan and a cheap new smile sounds rather appealing, and why wouldn’t it? However, you only have to remember Katie Price’s infamous video of natural teeth being shaved down to stubs to understand the realities of this bargain.

Celebrity endorsements are advertisements in which celebrities typically get the treatment for free in exchange for promotion—a world we’re pretty used to by now. But as many people don’t understand the ins and outs of cosmetic dental procedures and how they’re performed in the UK, they’re none the wiser about what they’re really receiving abroad.
