Everything you need to know about your tooth pain or toothache

Dental pulp can be inflamed for several reasons like:
- Tooth decay caused by cracked or broken teeth
- Broken, damaged or loose fillings
- Gums that are receding
Other causes of tooth pain might involve:
- Wisdom tooth eruption
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- Bacterial infections or ulcers
- Inflammation of the sinus
- Grinding or clenching teeth
- Tooth abscess
Depending on the cause of your tooth pain and the extent of the damage, several treatments might be applicable.
Most common solutions include:
- If caused by decay a dental filling can be used. However, if the extent of the decay is too much an inlay or onlay might be recommend, and if that fails, a dental crown.
- If your dental pulp is infected, which is followed by symptoms of sensitivity and tooth discolouration, a root canal will be required to save the tooth.
- If the tooth is beyond saving, tooth extraction will be recommended as a last resort.
If the dental pulp is infected, a course of antibiotics or a root canal treatment may be necessary. During this procedure, your emergency dentist will remove the pulp, fill the space with paste and cover the rest of the tooth with a crown to seal and protect it.
Tooth pain is an indication that something is wrong. Sometimes, the pain might range from mild to severe, which can come and go. However, it can be disturbed or made worse when eating and drinking.

- Lessen swelling by placing an ice pack for 15 minutes
- Chew food on the other side of the mouth
- Take pain relief medication like Ibruprofen and follow the instructions on the label
- Avoid acidic and sugary foods

I’ve been receiving orthodontic treatment for about a year now with Dr. Ines and she’s a wonderful mixture of highly skilled and professional, very thorough, and gentle in her approach. She is also super personable and I always look forward to my monthly appointments with her. She’s made such a big improvement to my teeth and I’m very happy with my treatment so far — I highly recommend Dr. Ines.

I had the lovely Dr Shankar for a 4 month Invisalign treatment. I mainly had overcrowding that needed sorting out after having had braces as a teenager and not wearing my retainer. Dr Shankar was delightful and has a lovely energy about him that made me feel very comfortable throughout the whole process. He explained processes well and also gave good advice to help me make informed decisions. I would highly highly recommend him to anyone in the Maida Vale area!

Following a friend’s recommendation, I brought my eldest daughter to Dr Ines do Carmo for orthodontic treatment.
Ines has been brilliant throughout the treatment; she is incredibly passionate about her work and this is reflected in her skilled perfectionism and the amazing results she achieves for her patients. From the start, Ines’ warm and friendly manner succeeded in putting my apprehensive daughter at ease. She was also forthcoming and thorough in her explanations of the treatment, and happy to share her extensive knowledge.
