Oral Cancer Screening at the Dentist

Oral cancer screening is a check of your lips, mouth, tongue, throat and neck for changes that could be an early sign of mouth cancer. At Maida Smiles, our website states that oral cancer screening is part of the new patient exam, so your dentist looks for these changes as well as checking your teeth and gums. It is a calm, short part of a visit, and for most people it finds nothing of concern.

Many people only think about it when something worries them. If you have noticed a sore spot, a patch or a lump and you want a mouth cancer check, please do not wait for your next routine appointment. This page explains what a screening involves, the signs to look out for, who has a higher risk, and what happens if your dentist wants a closer look. Nothing here replaces an examination, and only a clinician can tell you what a change in your mouth is.

What is oral cancer screening?

Oral cancer screening is a head, neck and mouth check that looks for signs of mouth cancer before you have noticed anything yourself. It sits inside a normal dental examination and does not need a separate appointment. According to Cancer Research UK, many dentists routinely check for mouth and oropharyngeal cancer, so they are often the first people to spot the early signs.

It is not a test that gives a yes or no. Screening is a careful look and feel, and the dentist then decides whether anything needs to be monitored, checked again or referred. We state on our site that new patient exams at Maida Smiles include oral cancer screening. For the wider detail of what a check up covers, see our dental examinations.

Mouth cancer signs to look out for

Mouth cancer signs are changes in or around the mouth that last and do not settle. The NHS lists the main symptoms as follows:

  • A mouth ulcer that lasts more than 3 weeks.
  • A red or white patch inside the mouth.
  • A lump inside the mouth, on the lip, or in the neck or throat.
  • Pain inside the mouth that does not go away.
  • Difficulty swallowing or speaking, or a hoarse voice that does not go away.
  • Losing weight without trying.

Most mouth ulcers are harmless and heal by themselves within a week or two. The point is the timing. According to the NHS, if you have an ulcer that has lasted more than 3 weeks you should see a GP, and a dentist can also help with ulcers, lumps, patches or pain in your mouth. The Oral Health Foundation's message is simple: if in doubt, get checked out. Having a change looked at does not mean something is wrong. It means you will know.

Oral cancer screening FAQs

Is oral cancer screening painful?

It is a gentle look and feel of your face, mouth and neck, so most people find it comfortable. Tell your dentist if any area is tender, because pain in the mouth that does not go away is worth mentioning. If you feel nervous, let us know at booking.

Do I need a separate appointment for mouth cancer screening?

No. Our website states that oral cancer screening is part of the new patient exam, so you do not need to book separately. If you have a specific worry, say so when you book so your dentist can give it time.

What are the first signs of mouth cancer?

The NHS lists a mouth ulcer that lasts more than 3 weeks, a red or white patch, a lump in the mouth, on the lip or in the neck, and pain that does not go away. These are also common with harmless problems, so they are a reason to get checked, not a reason to panic. A dentist or GP can examine the area.

Should I see a dentist or a GP about a mouth ulcer?

Either is fine. The NHS advises seeing a GP if an ulcer has lasted more than 3 weeks, and says a dentist can also help with ulcers, lumps, patches or pain in your mouth. If you are not sure, start with your dentist, who can look at it and refer you if needed.

Does the dentist diagnose mouth cancer?

No. A dentist can spot changes and refer you, but a diagnosis needs tests such as a biopsy, carried out by a specialist team. Your dentist will explain why they are suggesting a referral and what happens next.

Is there an NHS mouth cancer screening programme?

Cancer Research UK states there is no national screening programme for mouth and oropharyngeal cancer in the UK. That is why regular check ups and noticing changes yourself matter. For NHS advice on symptoms and next steps, visit nhs.uk.

I smoke or drink a lot. Should I tell my dentist?

Yes. These are known risk factors, and knowing about them helps your dentist look in the right places. Our registration form asks about smoking. Nobody will judge you, and we can talk about support to cut down or stop if you want it.
