Stage 1 — Gingivitis: Calculus builds and gums become inflamed. Reversible with treatment.
Stage 2 — Periodontitis: Inflamed gums separate from teeth, forming pockets with early bone loss. Treatable.
Stage 3 — Advanced Periodontitis: Deep pockets, severe bone loss, and risk of tooth loss.
Periodontal treatment
Dr Quintal achieved her master’s degree in Periodontology in 2012 and manages our periodontal cases that include chronic gum disease, gum grafts and other complex gum related issues.
Specific care to alleviate and manage symptoms of gum disease
Our gum dentists (periodontists) are responsible for preventing, diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, ensuring the damage caused by gum disease is minimal. For example, receding gums, black triangle pockets and tooth loss are common consequences.
Gum disease happens when the tissue around your teeth gets infected, causing inflammation, with the main contributor being down to plaque and tartar build-up, which is not frequently removed with root planing and scaling treatments.
When gum disease progresses past the initial gingivitis stages and minor inflammation, there can be little in the way of curing it, but we can ensure we stay on top of the condition to prevent further issues from developing as a result.
Stages of gum disease
If you ignore gum disease, your gums will shrink; your teeth will become lost and eventually fall out. Leading to much more expensive fixes and complex dentistry further down the line.
