Reasons You Might Need A Tooth Extraction
Removing a heavily damaged or infected tooth might improve your oral health. Often when a tooth’s pulp is infected, it can cause significant pain for patients, and if the prescribed treatment of a root canal fails to work, we can either try a re-root canal or remove the tooth altogether.
On top of this, if you also suffer from periodontal (gum) disease, which has caused the teeth to loosen, removing and replacing them with devices like dental implants might be necessary.
Another common reason for tooth extraction is when a mouth is overcrowded, causing teeth to become crooked, causing the patient’s oral health to suffer.
Before we move forward with brace correction treatments, for example, it might be necessary to create additional room in the mouth for teeth to fall into neater, natural positions.
How Long Does It Take To Recover From Extracted Tooth?
The answer depends on the complexity of your case and the reason why you need your tooth removed. However, most people feel back to normal within just a few days, with some forgetting about the procedure the next day.
We always advise patients to return to their normal activities within 48 to 72 hours, although it takes several weeks for the jawbone to heal completely.
That’s why especially with dental implants, we have to allow for a period of healing and cannot always place them immediately for missing teeth.
Some side effects are expected following an extraction, including bleeding, swelling and slight discomfort.
However, as the procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, you will be permitted to drive home if that’s how you’ve chosen to arrive at our practice.

What NOT To Do After A Tooth Extraction

For example, by avoiding a few simple things in the first few days of recovery, you can expect a more favourable recovery experience. We’ve listed them below:
DO NOT touch the sutures (try and avoid your tongue exploring this new empty area)
DO NOT smoke or drink alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours following the procedure.
DO NOT eat crunchy or hard foods; instead, opt for softer foods like yoghurts or pasta that are easy to chew.
DO NOT drink through a straw, as this can create suction that dislodges the blood clot.
DO NOT over-exert – this is your time to take it easy and allow your body to use the energy to heal the extraction site.
