Dental Implant vs Bridge: Which Is Better for a Missing Tooth?

Dental Implant vs Bridge: Which Is Better for a Missing Tooth?

October 21, 2026

Neither is better for everyone. A dental implant replaces the tooth root with a small post in the jawbone, then adds a crown on top. A dental bridge replaces the missing tooth with an artificial tooth that is held by the teeth beside the gap. The right choice depends on your gap, the health of the teeth and gums around it, your bone, your budget and how you want to look after it.

In general, an implant costs more at the start and leaves the neighbouring teeth alone, while a bridge is quicker and usually costs less at the start but relies on those neighbouring teeth for support. Your dentist can only tell you which suits you after an examination and X rays, so treat this guide as a way to prepare for that conversation.

Key takeaways

  • An implant is fixed in the jawbone. A bridge is fixed to the teeth either side of the gap.
  • A traditional bridge needs those neighbouring teeth to be shaped for crowns. An adhesive bridge needs much less shaping but is not suitable for every gap.
  • Implants need enough healthy bone and gums. Some people need a bone graft first.
  • Neither option comes with a lifetime guarantee. Both can last many years with good cleaning and regular check ups.
  • Our fees start from £2,500 for a single implant and from £1,050 per unit for a bridge, with the full cost set out by the dentist after assessment.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small post, usually made of titanium, that is placed in the jawbone under local anaesthetic. Once it has healed and bonded with the bone, it holds a crown that looks like a natural tooth. According to the Oral Health Foundation, implants are fixed in place and cannot be removed, and cleaning them is similar to cleaning natural teeth, with interdental brushes used around the implant every day.

Treatment happens in stages, with a healing period before the final crown is fitted. A single implant treats one missing tooth, and you can read more about single dental implants before you book a consultation.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed replacement for a missing tooth or teeth. The NHS describes bridges as a fixed replacement, and the Oral Health Foundation explains the two main types. In a traditional bridge, crowns are placed on the teeth on either side of the gap, with an artificial tooth joining them. The bridge is made in a laboratory and cemented in place.

An adhesive bridge, also called a resin bonded bridge, has small wings that attach to the back of nearby teeth. The Oral Health Foundation says it needs very little drilling, and it is often used for front teeth. Because it relies on strong, healthy neighbouring teeth, it is not suitable for every gap, and your dentist will tell you whether it could work for you. You can read more in our post on the Maryland bridge.

Dental implant vs bridge: a side by side comparison

This table sets out the main differences in plain terms. It is a general guide only, because every mouth is different.

BoneSits in the bone and may help keep it in place. Enough bone is needed, and a graft is sometimes advised firstDoes not replace the tooth root, so the bone under the gap is not supported in the same way

How long it can lastThe Oral Health Foundation says with good care implants can last many years, and that there is no lifetime guaranteeThe Oral Health Foundation says with good care a bridge can last many years
Who it suitsHealthy gums, enough bone, and a wish to avoid shaping nearby teethStrong neighbouring teeth, or teeth that already have crowns or large fillings, and a wish for a shorter treatment

How each one is fixed, and what that means for nearby teeth

The biggest practical difference is where the support comes from. An implant stands on its own in the jaw. A bridge borrows its support from the teeth on either side, which are called abutment teeth.

Implants and the teeth beside the gap

Because an implant does not rely on the teeth beside it, they are not filed down. This matters most when those teeth are healthy and have no fillings. A single implant also fills the space, which helps stop the teeth beside the gap from drifting into it over time.

Bridges and the teeth beside the gap

For a traditional bridge, enamel is removed from the teeth on either side so crowns can fit over them. That shaping cannot be undone, so it is worth asking how healthy those teeth are today. If they already have large fillings or crowns, the extra shaping may matter less. If they are untouched, many people prefer a different option. An adhesive bridge asks much less of the neighbouring teeth, though it may not be strong enough for every gap, particularly at the back of the mouth.

Bone, gums and cleaning

Bone changes after a tooth is lost. Our page on the effects of missing teeth explains that bone loss can begin within a few months in some cases and can speed up if gum disease is present. An implant sits in the bone, so it may help keep it in place. A bridge sits above the gum and does not replace the root.

If an implant is being considered after bone has thinned, a bone graft may be advised first. Our bone augmentation fee is £950, and the dentist explains whether you would need one after a scan.

Cleaning is different for each option. The Oral Health Foundation advises cleaning the area around an implant every day with interdental brushes, and cleaning under the false tooth of a bridge with special floss or cleaning aids. Gum disease can affect either option. The Oral Health Foundation warns that plaque around an implant can lead to peri implantitis, with red, sore or swollen gums and bleeding around the implant being warning signs. Regular check ups matter for both.

How long does each option last?

No source gives one figure for everyone. The Oral Health Foundation says that with good care implants can last many years but that there is no lifetime guarantee, and that a bridge can also last many years with good care. How long yours lasts depends on your cleaning, your gums, whether you smoke, how you bite, and whether you grind your teeth.

Some websites quote exact year ranges. Those ranges are often not tied to a named study, so we have not repeated them. If a bridge is replaced at some point, the cost of that replacement belongs in your thinking, just as a crown on an implant may one day need replacing. Ask your dentist what is realistic for your own mouth.

What does each option cost?

Costs differ because the treatments differ. Our fee pages give the starting points, and your dentist sets out the full cost after assessment.

  • Single implant: from £2,500. According to our implant fees, this covers the implant, abutment and crown, plus all your appointments, X rays, impressions and aftercare, and any adjustments and corrections. Extra work such as a sinus lift or gum treatment before placement is not included.
  • Dental bridge: from £1,050 per unit, as shown on our bridge costs.
  • Implant supported bridge: from £2,000, for a gap of several teeth in a row. This type is anchored by implants rather than by crowns on neighbouring teeth, and you can read about implant supported bridges.

A bridge usually costs less at the start, and an implant usually costs more at the start. Over many years the gap can narrow or widen depending on whether either needs replacing or repairing, so ask for a written plan that sets out both. Treatment above £250 can be spread over 12 months at 0% finance subject to status, and our dental finance options explain the longer terms. We are a credit broker, not a lender.

Which suits you? Common situations

A single missing tooth with healthy neighbours. An implant avoids shaping teeth that do not need it, so it is often considered first, provided there is enough bone and healthy gum.

Neighbouring teeth that already have crowns or large fillings. A traditional bridge may make practical sense, because those teeth may be restored anyway. A crown on each side is how a traditional bridge is anchored.

A missing front tooth. Appearance matters most here. Both can look natural. An adhesive bridge is sometimes used at the front when the teeth behind are strong, while an implant avoids relying on them.

Thin or lost bone. An implant may need a graft first. A bridge may avoid that step, though it does not support the bone.

Gum disease or heavy smoking. Both options are affected, and gum health usually has to be stabilised before either is placed. Your dentist will advise.

Wanting the quickest result. A bridge is usually quicker than an implant, which needs a healing period before the final crown.

When to see a dentist

See a dentist if a tooth has been lost or is about to be lost, if you have a loose tooth, or if a gap is getting harder to clean. Pain, swelling or a bad taste near a gap needs attention soon. According to the NHS, you can call 111 if you have no dentist or cannot get an emergency appointment. The NHS also says to go to A&E or call 999 if you find it hard to breathe, speak or swallow, or have a lot of swelling in your mouth.

Booking an assessment

If you are weighing up the two options, a dental implant consultation lets the dentist look at your gums, bone and the teeth beside the gap, and explain which option fits. You can also ask for a written plan with both choices costed side by side.

Dental implant vs bridge FAQs

Is a dental implant better than a bridge?

Not always. An implant avoids shaping the neighbouring teeth and is cleaned like a natural tooth, but it costs more at the start and needs enough bone and healthy gums. A bridge is quicker and usually costs less at the start but relies on nearby teeth. Your dentist can advise after an examination.

Does a bridge damage the teeth next to it?

A traditional bridge needs enamel to be removed from the teeth either side so crowns can fit, and that shaping cannot be undone. An adhesive bridge needs much less shaping. Whether either suits you depends on how strong and healthy those teeth are.

How much does an implant cost compared with a bridge?

Our single implant fee is from £2,500 and our bridge fee is from £1,050 per unit. The final cost depends on the number of units, materials and any extra work, so the dentist gives you the figure in a written plan.

Which lasts longer, an implant or a bridge?

The Oral Health Foundation says that with good care implants can last many years and that there is no lifetime guarantee, and that bridges can also last many years. Cleaning, gum health and check ups make a large difference to both.

Can I have an implant if I have lost bone?

Sometimes. The dentist assesses your bone and gums, and a bone graft may be advised first to improve stability. Our bone augmentation fee is £950. Suitability is decided after a scan and examination.

Is an implant or a bridge better for a front tooth?

Both can look natural. Many people prefer an implant because it does not rely on the teeth beside it, while an adhesive bridge can suit a front tooth if the teeth behind it are strong. Your dentist can show you which fits your bite.

Is the treatment uncomfortable?

Implant placement is done under local anaesthetic, and bridge preparation is normally done under local anaesthetic too. Some soreness afterwards is common and usually settles within a few days. Your dentist will explain what to expect and how to look after the area.

Can I pay for an implant or bridge in instalments?

Treatment above £250 can be spread over 12 months at 0% finance, subject to status, and longer terms may carry interest. We are a credit broker, not a lender. Our dental finance details explain the options.

I had my first visit and the team was very warm, caring and professional. The online booking platform makes it very easy to arrange your appointment. Doctor Pedro made me feel comfortable despite this being my first appointment since Covid. He is incredibly knowledgeable and offers you the best treatment for your specific condition. I would highly recommend them

Being very nervous about using dentists after a terrible experience when I was younger, I came to Maida Smiles and loved the calm patient demeanour of Pedro. You can clearly see Pedro and the team take pride in what they do and are perfectionists. The whole experience was great and I will never go to another dentist again.

Reena Nathwani

Delighted with the outcome of my treatment by Pedro. Meticulous attention to detail explaining exactly how the procedure would be carried out from first consultation to completion backed up with supporting guidance notes. Clearly an expert in his field and someone who cares passionately about the outcomes for his patients. Highly recommended.

I loved my first visit to Maida Smile Dental Clinic. The staff member at reception was very warm, welcoming and professional. My dentist, Priscilla, and her assistant were fantastic. I have quite sensitive teeth near my gums and I can find the probing and investigation quite uncomfortable during a consultation, but this wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t experience discomfort and felt in very safe hands. This also applied to the hygienist work. I didn’t even have to ask Priscilla to avoid using the ultra sound cleaner on the sensitive areas of my teeth. I’m looking forward to going back, and that’s not often you can say that about going to the dentist!

Since I first had the luck to be recommended and book an appointment with Dr. Pedro Gutierres over 8 years ago, I have never trusted my dental health nor my family’s to anyone else. It’s very hard to find a dentist who ticks all the boxes and even goes beyond any expectations you may have, from service, sympathy, professionalism, and expertise, etc., 5 stars are not enough to rate him. I was so happy when he opened his own clinic and surrounded himself with the best professionals you can find, I cannot recommend Maida Smiles Dental Clinic enough.

Blossom

“Pedro was so patient and professional throughout my treatment for my implants.. I chose to have my treatment with a local anaesthetic rather than any sedation and have a very bad gag reflex when anything touches the back of my throat. His patience throughout the experience was wonderful, completely putting me at ease and he also gave me a technique to help me in the future. I have seen him for my follow up and fully intend to book an annual visit in 2020. which is no small thing as I live 60 miles away.I can thoroughly recommend him for any treatment.”

Denise Gilbert

I was very nervous to pull my ingrown wisdom tooth. Dr Pedro Guiterres made me feel really comfortable and the job was completed very professionally. It didn’t take long at all and I didn’t feel any pain. I would definitely recommend his service at this practice.

Tracy Mensah

I was very nervous about having a dental implant but was immediately put at ease by Dr Pedro Gutierres. The procedure was explained in full and the care both during and after treatment has been of the highest standard. I received advice on how to look after my implant and have had no problems. I highly recommend.

Dawn Briggs

I had 7 implants installed by Dr Pedro Gutierres, including one which required a bone graft. In my 70 years I’ve had some bad experiences with dental treatment so it takes a lot for me to relax but, from my initial consultation, through to the end of the treatment, I had complete trust in Pedro’s expertise: preparations for the treatment and after-care were extremely thorough and fully explained, the treatment itself was surprisingly endurable (considering what was involved) and the implants have made a major difference to my life. If you are considering implants then I would whole-heartedly and sincerely recommend Pedro for this work.

Russ Hickman

I couldn’t recommend Maida Smiles enough: the care, attention to detail and the way Dentists and Nurses made sure I felt comfortable and safe throughout the treatments was incredible. Dr Pedro explained the treatments in detail to me and I have never felt under pressure to proceed… but I am very glad I did as I am happy and confident to smile again!

Mariana Pinheiro

Highly recommend this place to anybody looking for a friendly and trustworthy practice with an incredibly friendly and patient staff. Dr Pedro has been one of the best dentists I’ve ever had, he made me feel comfortable and were very knowledgeable in explaining every step of what he was doing and answering all of my questions. Amazing thorough the procedure, excellent communication, superb and professional treatment. I hope they keep it this way for a long time.

Joas Souza

Dr Pedro is a very good, confident and experienced professional. I’ve known him for some years now and always felt well cared for, either for small or bigger treatments.‍The facilities of the clinic are amazing and all the staff are very friendly. Highly recommended.”

Nelson Cafruni

I went to different clinics before, and nobody could really convince me until Maida Smiles did. The team here makes you comfortable , shows you different options and different budgets , and doesn't try to make you go only for one plan. I felt that the team was knowledgeable and wanted to help me , so that's why I decided to start

Diogo

I was referred to Dr. Pedro who did such a wonderful job with my teeth. The staff was extremely professional, they put you at ease, and it just made the whole experience easier. I've never looked back since

Louca

"I went to my hygienist a little while ago, and she said to me they were the best implants that she'd ever seen and she would never have known that they weren't my real teeth."

Sharon

Dr. Pedro explained the process of Invisalign to me. It sounded easy, it was quite a quick process, and the end result is my teeth moved back, so I'm quite happy.

Soula

I feel like I've not just developed a professional relationship with my dentist and the staff... they become more like friends as well, because of the kind of compassion and sympathy that they give you during treatment.

Alvin

"After a friend recommended the clinic, I was referred to Dr. Pedro, who did such a wonderful job with my teeth. The staff was extremely professional; they put you at ease, and it just made the whole experience easier. They have more than met my expectations. I have to have a few more implants, and I'm not afraid anymore. Now, finally, I can live again."

"After not having a great experience with previous dental treatments, I was desperate for someone that I trusted. I broke a tooth, and even before I saw Dr. Pedro, he reassured me that I was going to be fine. He made me feel very comfortable and at ease. It was an amazing experience, from not only Dr. Pedro but also all the staff in the clinic, and I would definitely recommend [them] ".

Mariana

I chose Maida Smiles because of the reviews and a friend who was really happy with the results. The results definitely met my expectations. My expressions are much more smooth than before and it really makes the difference

Carolina

The staff were kind and accommodating, and the dentist provided clear, helpful advice that made a real difference. The whole experience was reassuring. Highly recommend their professionalism and expertise!

Safiya Guled

I am always anxious when having to see the dentist and this was one of my first experiences with Maida Smiles. The dentist, Benedict Harrison was very reassuring and immediately put me at ease. He was quite lucid in his explanations of what had to be done, etcetera, and is making good progress with the ongoing treatment. Also, the rest of the staff were friendly and just plain nice.

John Jacobs

Wow wow Dr Claudia is the best dentist in London, my kid adores her and it is always a pleasant visit. Can’t recommend her enough

Bel Cohn

I am delighted with the results of my replacement veneers.

Dr Benedict Harrison was very good at talking me through the whole process and keeping me informed during the treatment if there were any issues - which there weren’t.

He has a charming demeanour which is an added advantage in a dentist, who I think we all agree are not our favourite people, overall a 5 star experience.

Karen Shepherd

I went to the Maida Smiles Clinic for the first time and had the most wonderful experience! I am dentist phobic but strangely left the place with a big smile on my face (literally!). The receptionist was super kind, Susan was impeccable and very helpful, and I had my appointment with the most amazing dentist Dr Mafalda Vilhena. Couldn’t recommend her enough. She explains the whole procedure and is very rigorous in her work. Congratulations to Dr Pedro Gutierres for creating such an excellent working environment and to all the team. I will be back and bringing my family along and we don’t even live in Maida Vale. Thank you for such an impeccable job on my teeth and for taking my fear of dentists away. Note: they don’t cover NHS, only private bookings or with insurance.
