A throbbing tooth, a sudden bad taste or a tender lump on the gum can be frightening, especially when swelling reaches the cheek or jaw. These symptoms can have several causes, so only an examination can show what is happening.
If you suspect an abscess, arrange urgent care for a tooth abscess in London. Contact your dentist promptly for persistent pain, a growing swelling, pus or a fever. If you cannot reach a dentist or do not have one, NHS 111 can help you find urgent dental care.
Call 999 or attend A&E immediately if you are finding it hard to breathe, speak or swallow, have severe mouth, face or neck swelling, a painful or swollen eye, vision changes, heavy bleeding that will not stop, or marked difficulty opening your mouth.
For less severe symptoms, use this simple checklist while arranging help:
A pharmacist can advise about suitable pain relief while you wait. Follow the packet directions and never exceed the stated dose.
An urgent assessment starts with a careful history, not an assumption. Tell the dentist when pain began, whether it throbs or hurts when you bite, whether swelling or a bad taste is changing, and whether you have a fever or feel unwell. Mention medicines, allergies, medical conditions, pregnancy and recent dental treatment or antibiotics.
The dentist will examine the tooth, gums and face, with clinical tests as appropriate. A periapical X-ray may be taken when indicated. These findings help identify the source, assess the extent of infection and judge whether the tooth is restorable.
If pus can be reached safely, treatment may involve drainage or opening the tooth to release pressure and address the cause. SDCEP guidance on acute apical abscesses recommends local measures to achieve drainage and remove the cause where possible.
If the tooth is restorable, root canal treatment can remove infected tissue and seal the canals. If it cannot be predictably saved, extraction may be the safer option. Antibiotics are not a substitute for source control. A dentist may consider them for spreading infection, systemic signs such as fever or malaise, relevant health risks or unavoidable delay.
Do not use leftover antibiotics. If prescribed, follow the instructions and contact the practice if symptoms worsen rapidly, fail to improve or new symptoms appear.
Before investigation or treatment, you should receive understandable information about options, likely benefits and risks, prognosis and costs. The General Dental Council consent standard requires valid consent before treatment. Consent should be revisited if the plan or estimate changes.

If the tooth can be retained, published root canal prices start from £950 for an incisor, £1,050 for a premolar and £1,150 for a molar. If removal is safer, a regular extraction starts from £300 and a surgical extraction from £450.

I have quite sensitive teeth near my gums and I can find the probing and investigation quite uncomfortable during a consultation, but this wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t experience discomfort and felt in very safe hands. This also applied to the hygienist work. I didn’t even have to ask Priscilla to avoid using the ultra sound cleaner on the sensitive areas of my teeth.
