Composite bonding is a treatment that builds a tooth coloured resin onto the surface of a tooth to change its shape, length or appearance. The resin is shaped, set with a curing light and polished so that it blends with the teeth beside it. Because the material is added directly to the tooth rather than made in a laboratory, it is usually quicker and less involved than veneers or crowns.
It has limits, and you should hear them before you book. According to the General Dental Council (GDC), patients should be told that bonding can stain, lose its shine, wear, chip or come away from the tooth, and that removing it without affecting the enamel can be extremely difficult. For that reason we do not describe bonding as simple or risk free, and we do not promise a number of years. You should decide with the full picture.
Most bonding enquiries fall into three groups, and your dentist may suggest a mix of them.
A small chip on a front tooth can often be rebuilt in resin so the tooth looks whole again. Larger breaks, or teeth that already have big fillings, may need a different approach such as a crown, and your dentist will tell you if that is the case.
Narrow spaces between front teeth can be closed by adding resin to the sides of the teeth. Wider gaps or crowding are often better handled by moving the teeth, so aligners such as Invisalign may be worth discussing first.
Edge bonding is the name many people use when composite is added to the biting edge of a front tooth, to even it up, lengthen it slightly or soften a worn or jagged edge. If you have searched for edge bonding in London, it is the same treatment as composite bonding, applied to the edge. Edges take the force of biting, which makes them the place where bonding is most likely to chip. Your habits and your bite therefore matter a great deal.

Composite bonding works best when the teeth and gums underneath are healthy. Before we start, your dentist will look at several things.

Your first step is a conversation. A free consultation with our treatment coordinator lets you ask about options, prices and timing, and what it covers is explained under free consultation. On the day of treatment, your dentist talks through the shape and shade you want, cleans the tooth and prepares the surface so the resin holds. The resin is then applied in layers, shaped by hand and set with a light. Your dentist checks your bite, trims any high spots and polishes the finish. Many cases need no anaesthetic, but your dentist will tell you what to expect.
A simple case can take around an hour, and treating several teeth takes longer. Only partly. The resin can be adjusted or replaced, but the GDC says removing it without affecting the enamel can be extremely difficult. Think of it as a long term change rather than something you can simply take off.
Many people find it comfortable and do not need an injection, but this depends on the tooth and the work involved. Tell your dentist if you are nervous or have sensitive teeth and they will adapt the visit.
Edge bonding is composite bonding used on the biting edge of a tooth. It evens up worn, chipped or uneven edges. Because edges take more force when you bite, they can chip more easily than other areas.
