Veneers suit adults with healthy teeth and gums who want to improve the shape, colour or alignment of a few teeth. They are not a substitute for orthodontic treatment. They can hide mild crookedness without moving the teeth underneath.

A dental veneer is a thin layer of composite resin or ceramic that is fixed to the front surface of a tooth. Dentists use veneers for chips, discolouration that whitening does not shift, gaps, worn edges and small differences in tooth shape. Veneers can change how teeth look, but they do not straighten teeth or replace a missing one.
According to the General Dental Council (GDC), patients should be given clear information about the options, risks and costs of any treatment before they agree to it. That is how we approach veneers at Maida Smiles. We explain the choices first and you decide in your own time.
We offer three types. They differ in material, how they are made and what they cost, and your dentist will explain which fits your teeth. We do not promise a particular look or length of life for any veneer. That depends on your teeth, your bite and how you look after them.

Composite veneers are made from tooth coloured resin that your dentist shapes and hardens directly on the tooth. Composite veneers are placed in a single visit and described as non permanent, and they can be repaired or replaced later. Composite is the lower cost route, though resin can stain and wear sooner than ceramic.
Porcelain veneers are made in a laboratory from a ceramic material and bonded to the tooth. Porcelain is often chosen by people who want a durable, natural looking finish. Our page on porcelain veneers says that up to 0.5mm of enamel may be removed in some cases. Ask your dentist whether that applies to you.
Emax is a type of ceramic used for veneers. Details on Emax veneers are on our national page. Your dentist can explain how Emax compares with porcelain and composite for your teeth.

A veneer consultation is an appointment to look at your teeth, gums and bite, discuss what you would like to change and agree a plan. Your dentist will check for decay and gum problems first, because they should be treated before veneers are placed. A new patient dental examination is £110 and an existing patient examination is £95, with a £50 refundable deposit taken at booking and returned when you attend.
Your dentist will explain how your veneers would be made, whether any enamel needs to be reshaped, and how many visits to expect. You will be told the fee for your chosen type before you start, and you will not be asked to commit on the day.
Veneers need the same care as natural teeth: brushing twice a day, cleaning between teeth and regular check ups. Your dentist will advise you on biting hard objects, grinding and staining drinks. A hygiene visit is a good way to keep the edges around veneers clean.

I have quite sensitive teeth near my gums and I can find the probing and investigation quite uncomfortable during a consultation, but this wasn’t the case at all. I didn’t experience discomfort and felt in very safe hands. This also applied to the hygienist work. I didn’t even have to ask Priscilla to avoid using the ultra sound cleaner on the sensitive areas of my teeth.
