A family dentist is a practice where parents, children and teenagers can all be seen for check ups, cleaning and treatment, so that one clinic knows the whole household. We welcome children as well as adults, and our children's check up is listed at £95 on our fee page.

We describe our team as dentists and a dental therapist, not as specialists in paediatric dentistry.
A children's check up is an examination of your child's teeth, gums and bite to spot problems early. Our children's page says it can include advice on diet and cleaning, a brushing and flossing demonstration, a check on habits such as thumb sucking, and an assessment of baby teeth and bite. X rays are taken only where needed, and small x rays are included in the child examination fee on our fee page.
According to the NHS, children aged 3 and over should be offered fluoride varnish at least twice a year. Our children's page lists fluoride varnish and fissure sealants among its treatments, and a fissure sealant is £55 on the fee page. Your dentist will say which of these your child needs.
Plenty of children feel unsure at the dentist. We keep the first visit simple, and a first appointment may be only a look and a chat. If your child, or you, find dentistry stressful, our approach to dental anxiety explains how we support nervous patients.
The NHS says to start brushing as soon as the first milk tooth comes through, using fluoride toothpaste with no less than 1,000ppm of fluoride and only a smear of toothpaste for children under 3. From 3 to 6 years, a pea sized amount is advised, and children should spit out the excess without rinsing, so the fluoride stays on the teeth. The NHS also says children need help or supervision with brushing until they are at least 7. Brush twice a day for about 2 minutes. Your dentist can advise on a higher strength if your child needs one.
